As the seasons progress

A lot of tv shows now have amazing first series, then it suddenly goes on a downward spiral until it’s cancelled or finished.

So what are your top shows that in your opinion, has not gone downhill.

Mine are:-

The good place
Brooklyn 99
Firefly
Dark Angel
Dollhouse
And whilst it had some bad episodes, Supernatural

Six Feet Under. Also the best end to a series I’ve ever seen.

Schitt’s Creek definitely, and I know some were disappointed by the most recent series, but I’d ass Sex Education.

Beat that every other show

Poor Firefly, didn't get the chance to go downhill.
Buffy was great all 7 seasons on TV plus the comics afterwards

I love It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

I think it peaked series 5/6/7. Some great episodes in later series too but not as consistent. Series 14 wasn’t so good but the one just realised i really enjoyed

OhWhyNot · 07/02/2022 21:16

I've just thought of one!

Unforgotten

Peakypolly · 08/02/2022 00:51

Succession has seemed to improve.
I think Breaking Bad was pretty consistent.
I feel Peaky Blinders first series was the best, fingers crossed for the final one.

JacketOnTheHook · 08/02/2022 01:44

Only connect

SantaClawsServiette · 08/02/2022 01:58

I agree with The Last Kingdom, and Succession.

I disagree with Peakey Blinders, I thought it started with promise it didn't live up to in subsequent seasons. To much style over substance.

I thought The Mandalorian stayed pretty level, a few episodes were uneven but both seasons maintained similar quality overall.

Shetland has been fairly consistent.

Shows that are only one series are hard to compare, its easier to maintain something with some narrative momentum for that amount of time.

In some cases like Call the Midwife it just seems they become too distant from the source material, in that case a book but it can also be the original vision of the series. In some cases they obviously are taking a concept that worked for a limited number of shows and milking it as long as possible (Stranger Things.) In some cases they just become increasingly unhinged (like Wentworth.)

But I alsomore and more find there are shows that start out great, there is a premise that seems compelling, some smart writing, it's stylish, great actors - but it just tries too hard to be cool and edgy and there isn't anything else. Like Killing Eve. There's only one trick in the bag and the rest is all flash.

Popsicle33 · 08/02/2022 04:57

Hannibal and Ozark

RussianSpy101 · 08/02/2022 05:00

Power / Ghost
Line of duty
Motherland
Desperate housewives

ashitghost · 08/02/2022 05:02

Ozark

sashh · 08/02/2022 06:03

Of course Firefly only had the one season but I’d agree that the episodes increased in quality as it went on.

We are still in mourning...😔

Castle got better and better, with the addition of playing, "spot the firefly reference" and "spot the firefly cast member"

Death in Paradise.

I mean the script is virtually the same each episode so it can't really go up or down but you know exactly what you are getting.

Masterchef, in many iterations. Are we allowed reality type TV.

RampantIvy · 08/02/2022 06:11

I felt that Red Dwarf dipped in the middle then came back stronger.
