7year DD has her friend coming for dinner - she's gluten free. Any ideas please.

I’m coeliac and me and my kids eat mainly GF. Spaghetti bol with gf pasta is a fab. Or toad in the hole…
Sausages in oil in oven tray and brown
Batter is 100g cornflour, 3 eggs and 150ml of milk, mix cornflour and eggs in mixer and add milk slowly. Add to sausages and oil when boiling hot, 25 mins in oven.
Bistro best gravy is gf.
Otherwise lots of meals are gf if ‘natural’ ingredients.
Tesco do good gf pizza bases and so they can add their own toppings as well xx

Maidofdishonour · 06/02/2022 22:19

I would ask her mum what she likes to eat. Mum might be nervous that you might accidentally contaminate the food if the child is coeliac. You can buy gf fish fingers, nuggets etc if you are unsure

Seeline · 06/02/2022 22:21

Be careful if doing Bolognese or similar that you use gluten free stock/stock cube.

Stir fry- many GF cannot tolerate soy source

Sausages need to be GF - many aren't.

Gluten is in so many things...

Seeline · 06/02/2022 22:22

Sauce not source!!

AdaColeman · 06/02/2022 22:22

Fillets of plaice quickly fried, peas and new potatoes.

Home made fish pie, with peas and wilted spinach.

Home made chicken casserole, use cornflour to thicken the gravy if you need to.

Chicken & mushroom risotto.

Or ask what her favourite meal is.

Confuddledandmuddled · 06/02/2022 22:22

Yes I should have said check everything! A lot of sausages are gf but not all… and if you’re using stock cubes gnorr is gf but oxo is not x

PragmaticWench · 06/02/2022 22:23

Definitely ask their parents what they prefer. DD is coeliac and also damn fussy. Hmm So hard when people prepare something GF but she won't eat it.

The main issue will be with cross contamination if they're coeliac, so don't use the same chopping board, knife, spoon, colander etc. If just GF then not such a bother.

We like to do tacos with gluten free tortillas. Or anything with rice, GF pasta, meat and veggies.

delilahbucket · 06/02/2022 22:27

Tacos or mini fajitas with Old El Paso corn tortillas. You can make your own seasoning with a well stocked spice cupboard and some tomato puree. Sides can include grated cheese, soured cream, homemade salsa and guacamole.

Houseofvelour · 06/02/2022 22:30

Pasta bake with GF pasta

SparkleTwinkle101 · 06/02/2022 22:33

I would reach out to her parent to ask what she likes / if in doubt you can get GF pizza/pasta and could do some chicken/tuna/cheese/create your own pasta dish.

You can also get GF pizza bases and again do a create your own

ffscovid · 06/02/2022 22:39

DS is GF and I always suggest jacket potatoes with baked beans and cheese when friends' mums ask for dinner ideas (just be aware that if you use pre-grated cheese it might not be GF as it often contains flour to stop it sticking together.

specialsauce · 06/02/2022 22:46

Pudding idea:

Banana pancakes with cream and sugar. Just mash 1 banana with a fork and mix with 2 beaten eggs. Makes 4 little pancakes and sooooo quick and easy

Thewindwhispers · 06/02/2022 22:57

Most important thingnis to make surenit doesn’t get contaminated with a crymb from someone else’s meal / pan.

Schar gf pizza bases are the best we have found (way better than the completely ready made gf pizzas). Add tomato puree and cheese.

Or gf pasta.

But really you have to ask the mum. Some kids hate pizza / pasta. Mine won’t eat rice. You def wanna ask.

Mogwig · 06/02/2022 23:29

Chicken mini fillets. Crudités. Home made potato wedges or ........ God forbid .......... chips!

PurpleBaskets · 07/02/2022 07:36

I would just go simple and do chips (normal McCain chips are gf - not the French fries though) and gf nuggets plus baked beans. That way both kids can eat it (yours won’t notice the gf nuggets I doubt).

Macey78 · 07/02/2022 09:02

Thanks everyone - great ideas - I'll keep it simple. Will ask her mum also what she likes to eat.

I was going to say ask mum or what would you normally do then we can tell you a GF. alternative

Most supermarkets do GF pizza nuggets pasta etc even vegetarian versions.

Jacket potato is an easy option but be careful if you use butter etc as crumb contamination from normal food can occur
