Is just a bog standard mum living in an bog standard house, working in a bog standard job with no cleaner or nanny, who drinks a wee bit too much wine at the weekend and eats to much chocolate, who lets their kids watch tv so i can get peace and wouldn't LTB for Leaving the toilet seat up or leaving dirty washing on the floor.

I feel like i don't fit in even in real life i dont know people like the ones on mumsnet. This is in no way a criticism, i love the support on the site.

Thanks OP for defining for us all what is "normal", and apologiee that some of us do not fit your mould.

LimeSegment · 07/02/2022 04:13

Everyone has a few things they do, and a few things they don't. You can't define people a certain way.

For example, the PPs above "I don't have a cleaner, I am the cleaner". The cleaner at my work was telling me recently she has a cleaner. She said she cant be arsed cleaning all day at work then doing more at home. Makes sense.

MichaelAndEagle · 07/02/2022 08:15

I'm also not from that world. Don't know anyone who privately educates their child, or who has a nanny or cleaner.
But I actually welcome the way MN opened my eyes to this world. It is real life for a lot of people and some of the ways other mumsnetters approach life have been useful for me to hear.
E.g. how to turn my job into a career (which for me has been life changing). I don't have anyone in real life who could give that kind of advice.
So I disagree they only exist on here, I think they are very much real! But I just don't know people like that.

@GTAlogic another Yorkshire mum here, we also go to a caravan on the east coast, always have. Who needs Fiji when you can have Filey (and I'd move there in a heartbeat!)

I imagine all those users who claim their kids NEVER drink fizzy juice are appalled by this thread!

This was actually something I did try and be strict about Grin. Only because I drink far too much fizzy juice myself but now they have it once a week or so usually along with their McDonalds.

I never change sheets more than once a fortnight, open the door if the bell rings, don’t take it personally if a friend has to cancel an arrangement or sometimes sees other friends without me present.

I am happy to have family members stay overnight, and to stay in other people’s houses.

And I don’t kill spiders.

Live in an ex council house.
Work for the nhs (shudder)
Have a now trained but was a feral dog who barks at everything
No cleaner or gardener . I do it
Husband is a lazy twat and we argue . That's normal.
I don't drive
I don't have double glazing, full central heating or a 40k kitchen.
I have no magic money pot (savings)
Bit like 99.9% of the country.

Ariela · 07/02/2022 10:10

Me too, also a fortnight on the sheets, but not a wine drinker. Kitchen floor seems to permanently need a clean - but it's lino not Karndean, and my kitchen isn't grey, it's 30 year old dark oak but works perfectly well even all the hinges so cannot justify changing it. And we have mice in the loft which kept me awake all night. We also don't do holidays, too many animals/livestock, but not averse to nights away.

I'll never forget the time we were sitting on the beach at Filey watching a storm approach and then had to run off up the hill to the car!

Filey, like many places along the east coast, is beautiful but going on holiday there doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Last year we went to Withernsea and loved it!

It is 'normal' for some but the majority of people I know in that context are not particularly happy behind the scenes. Marriages that are complicated and mental health problems that accompany that, no real solutions of divorce because of the lifestyle being lost. So I believe it and know it exists but that doesn't mean it is perfect or harmonious.

KurtWilde · 07/02/2022 14:53

@GTAlogic haha we've had to do that too. We were on the beach at Reighton once and a sea fret descended so thick we lost my dad. It was weird and echoey with people just appearing and disappearing out of the mist trying to find the road back up through the cliffs.

So glad theres so many of us around, loving this thread.

@HootOwl where in my post did i say normal. What even is normal. I said bog standard.
