Why can't it be me? So jealous.

Why do these sorts of things only ever seem to happen to other people?

@SillyBud

People would know I’d won because it is a constant conversation around here that houses are impossible to buy unless you have two six figure salaries

you could say you inherited.

I have thought of this (a lot). But, most people know about my family and so forth. I’m an oversharer.

I think I’d probably say I won exactly the cost of the house plus a small amount extra for furniture/decorating, or maybe a bit less and that we had a very small mortgage.

Very close friends I would set up a trust fund for her children. And others if I was telling I would treat them, either helping with deposits or a big holiday or something. I’d donate to charities but also to the funds that I have benefited from academically and top up all the local PTAs.

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 05/02/2022 15:08

I don't think anyone I knew would find out. We could each tell the other's family that we had inherited/been given a house on the coast by the other side of the family, and I wouldn't tell anyone about our one-room London flat!

My expensive pleasures in life are not things that are advertised or knowable. Couldn't care less about cars and wouldn't put my DC into any ridiculous private schools. But I'd go to the opera and ballet every night, the absolute best seats. I wouldn't have to fret over whether to see Nuñez or Osipova or Hayward, I'd see them all!

toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 15:11

Wouldn’t people wonder how you could afford going every day. Saying you’ve inherited money is no different saying you’ve won some money on the lottery, don’t have specify the amount.

Bloodybridget · 05/02/2022 15:21

I won £50 on Premium Bonds! And got £25 only a couple of weeks ago!

DickMabutt73962 · 05/02/2022 15:23

I'm mad it didn't happen to me and I didn't even play 😂

ABitBesottedWithMyDog · 05/02/2022 15:33

They wouldn't know. I don't post my doings on social media!

MmeD · 05/02/2022 15:42

@Bloodybridget, congratulations! Clearly your star is in the ascendancy and there’s never been a better time for you to buy a lottery ticket.

@MmeD you're right! I've only ever bought a lottery ticket once . .

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 15:59

i do wonder who the person is and what was their life like up to now-are/were they broke?

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 16:00

like a win like that takes you to anther world and gives you such freedom,I can't imagine it

IncompleteSenten · 05/02/2022 16:04

We're still in Europe. Brexiteers didn't all buy paddles and start the island off to the US.

toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 16:05

@ABitBesottedWithMyDog don’t you talk to people in real life

Not about ballet or opera! That would raise some eyebrows around here.

But no, I don't wang on about myself. Prefer being mysterious, I suppose.

Hdhr8jsj · 05/02/2022 17:03

Id wait a few months and then I'd tell a few friends I'd won a much smaller amount.

Alas it wasn't me

TheCountessOfGrantham · 05/02/2022 17:56

I want 17 million. That's enough to set us abs our children up for their whole lives. And it's enough to make sure my family are comfortable. I have a plan. I just need to win 17 million!

Bunnycat101 · 05/02/2022 21:16

I think a lot of people would be I’ll-equipped to deal with that sort of win. If I won that sort of money I’d set up a charitable foundation which would give me purpose, create employment opportunities for others etc. for most people going from normal or even averagely wealthy to £100m would change your life beyond all recognition, set you apart from peers and friends etc.

I could hide £1-2m easily but don’t think it would be possible to hide £100m plus. If you have money to friends/family inevitably you’d upset someone for not giving them more etc. people would never treat you the same again.

Sugaris · 06/02/2022 12:03

I’m pretty sure I could hide it, because my outward life would change so little. I think it depends on how big your social circle is.

Like @ABitBesottedWithMyDog, no-one’s going to see me going to the ballet each night, and the only big things I covet are a beautiful horse and the farmer’s field next door. I’d resign and spend a lot more time in the US and Canada visiting family who emigrated years ago, but they’d just assume that I’d mellowed at last after years of workaholism.

It’s a crying shame I’ll never have the chance to prove how well I’d keep such a humongous secret. Grin

@Costacoffeeplease

Should the U.K. still be involved with the EUROmillions?
We are still in Europe.
