Why can't it be me? So jealous.

Why do these sorts of things only ever seem to happen to other people?

@BrieAndChilli

I also think - wouldn’t it be better for 109 people to win a million each? That’s enough to buy a house/pay off debts/stet up a business etc
It might have been won by a syndicate...
bindud · 05/02/2022 13:35

the problem with that is tax which is quite heavy

there will be ways around it

jollygreenpea · 05/02/2022 13:39

I would keep it quiet, then when there is a smaller amount to win in a few weeks, only then would I spend carefully and gift. No one would then think I had over 100 million, and I would be very good at investing it Wink

Tobchette · 05/02/2022 13:43

I agree with @mahoncash. Don't tell too many people, or even nobody.

I'd maybe tell my closest relatives and friends that I had won a smaller amount - enough to treat my parents to early retirement and to give struggling friends a small gift to pay their bills comfortably, and to explain the larger home we would buy. Maybe if tell them I'd won a million.

But I'd never give anyone a life changing amount. Because I'd be responsible for giving them the money but not how they'd spend it. Most people I know have worries like how to deal with rising energy bills but by and large they have designed their own lives and are on the course they have set. I'd hate to be the person who steered it off course. Id make sure nobody was freezing or starving, wasn't going to bed every night worrying about money, but I wouldn't change their lives.

I'd try to keep my own life as normal as possible. Maybe still even work part time to keep stability. I'd like to think I'd behave responsibly. I'd also like to go to bed with a free conscience at night, and wouldn't want to be up worrying that I'd given person xyz this money and now they were changing their lives too radically and that risk was now on me.

Also have drug addicts in the family. I would never ever want them to find out. And no even the fanciest rehab in the world wont save them until they want to save themselves. Giving them a lump sum would be literally signing their death certificate.

Sunnyday321 · 05/02/2022 13:50

Too much money , you'd have to employ a while host of people to manage it for you and then worry they were doing it correctly. Yes you can help a shit load of people and charities , but that doesn't help with wanting to remain anomalous . Win 5 million and it's enough to change your life , in a good way.

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 13:55

this but too many people have the instagram mindset where they'd want to live like Jennifer Aniston and share it all with the world. I wouldn't do this.

SwedishEdith · 05/02/2022 13:57

@Costacoffeeplease

Should the U.K. still be involved with the EUROmillions?
Eh? Confused
toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 14:09

Doesn’t gift tax only come into play if you die within 7 years

If I won 5m I think I could hide it & would however 100m is another league. I have no desire to splash my life all over sm but I would want to experience so many things & 100m would give me the means for that. It would be weird & hard to keep that hidden from friends. With 5m I'd use caterers & meal delivery services, with 100m I want the private chef!

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 14:17

nope

Theunamedcat · 05/02/2022 14:19

@Anniegetyourgun76

I got all excited when I got an email to say I'd won but it was only a fiver ☹️
I win £6.80 go me!
toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 14:21

So how does it work @SillyBud

Oblomov22 · 05/02/2022 14:24

I would only tell a few people that I'd come into a smaller amount.

StColumbofNavron · 05/02/2022 14:31

I only need £1.9m to buy the bog standard 4 bed house across the road from school. People would know I’d won because it is a constant conversation around here that houses are impossible to buy unless you have two six figure salaries.

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 14:32

you could say you inherited.

Lampshading · 05/02/2022 14:39

Admittedly I don't buy a ticket so the odds weren't good, but would have loved to have won. Would be amazing to be able to give friends and family some financial security whilst never having to bloody worry again about bills etc! I'd be tempted to evade telling people exactly how much.

toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 14:43

You would have to make up a dead relative and then everyone would feel sorry for your loss

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 14:47

not really, many people have relatives that die they are not close to, wouldn't make me feel sympathy for them. I have many aunts/uncles and 1st cousins I never see and when I did as a child it was at most for a week every year so I have no big relationships with them. Heck I have 2 brothers living in Oz I haven't seen or chatted to in nearly 4 years.

toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 14:49

But they would have to be a reasonably close relative to leave you more than £1 million I would have thought

eightlivesdown · 05/02/2022 14:50

Entered, won nothing. I only seem to win, and then only a few £, when I've entered online and let the system pick my numbers. When I pick my own numbers I win nothing.

But you only have to win big once, and I can dream. If I did, I wouldn't be flash but would live more comfortably. No more worrying whether I could afford something. Peace of mind.

But I absolutely wouldn't be pictured in the newspapers celebrating. I understand people feeling euphoric after winning, but this is a big mistake.

ponkydonkey · 05/02/2022 14:52

There was a thread ' I won the lottery AMA"

It was great

toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 14:56

I wouldn’t publicise it in the media but if you don’t change your life in some way after winning £109 million that would be very sad.

If you have everything that you want then surely you would treat family or close friends. You wouldn’t just put the money in the bank and sit on it and do nothing with it

takingmytimeonmyride · 05/02/2022 14:57

I won!

£7.80. Planning carefully on how to spend my winnings. I will probably invest it. In more lottery tickets.

Probably just as well I didn't win, I couldn't decide which house I wanted to buy last night when I was checking out Rightmove.

Next time!

toomuchlaundry · 05/02/2022 14:59

DH and I wouldn’t be able to agree on what to spend it on, I would probably end up living in a new house and he would end up living in a garage with all his new cars!

SillyBud · 05/02/2022 15:01

then say you rang her every Sunday and she had no family.
