Please answer my random questions I have had for years!

  • In tv and films when there's filming in a house, are these real peoples houses that are rented for a time during filming? I'm guessing for long term projects like modern family they are sets, but for a tv crime series for example they look like real lived in houses?
  • How do you go about getting a road or area 'shut down' from public so that you can film there?
  • Is there somewhere where stock is kept for eg. Old cars for things set in the past? And the team can just hire them out?

I'm sure I'll think of more Grin Would love to finally know!

Yes, unless they have built a set in the studio, the production will rent a house that suits the requirements of the story and the location. There may be a certain amount of refurbishing and redecoration needed. If the house is occupied the family will often be put up in a hotel for the duration. As for vehicles there are companies that specialise in providing modern and vintage vehicles for tv and film. There are also lots of prop and costume houses that hire out period props and costumes.

The council arrange road closures.
You can put your own house to rent for film and TV (expect it to get trashed).

Our road has been closed off for filming a couple of times. It’s arranged with the council who are v happy to sort it. They use the outside of our houses (inside scenes are sets) and we get paid. Everyone is very happy

Usually outside will be a location and interior a set. Giant things like cars will usually be hired from a specialist, but there are major prop and costume houses that hire out all manner of things - the National, RSC and BBC have huge prop and costume stores, and they aren’t exclusive to them so you may see the same dress worn on a character in something on the bbc and on something on itv.

Yes, people who have properties of interest let them out, or if it’s something more unusual your location manager goes on a hunt.,

You pay the council a lot of money, and work with them and the police to film at a low traffic time eg early morning.

There are prop houses but maybe for something like cars you’d go to enthusiasts via clubs, or (more expensively) dealers

They would only go to the considerable expense of building a set if they were shooting an entire series in the same house. For a house or room that was only going to feature in a few scenes it would almost certainly be a location. But the interior house and the exterior house may be in two different places.
