Has anyone with older children switched to part time work?

I currently run a small business, working 4 and a bit days over five (so I do three school pick ups, but basically full time.) I love my job and earn very well. I’m also knackered and often quite stressed. Things get lost, missed and forgotten sometimes. DC are 13 age 10. We have a fab housekeeper 2 days a week, so housework is much reduced. DH helps a lot, but has a busy City job.

After much soul searching ( and back of the envelope calculations), I’ve decided to drop down to two and a half days. I worry a little that it’s lame when others are picking up their careers at this point, and I must have terrible time management skills or be lazy. But I just want some time to exercise, find a good next school for my disabled son, bond with our dog, do the life admin, see my mum, see friends, do yoga, sort out some health stuff (off for my first mammogram Friday!), cook lovely family meals, read books, garden, learn French etc.

Has anyone else stepped back from work a little at this stage? Did you regret it, or feel under occupied? Any tips for using the time well? What do you do with your non-working days? Thanks 🙂

If you can afford it I don't blame you at all! I suppose my only comment would be that I would feel guilty for doing it for 'me time' ie learning French and yoga if your husband doesn't get to do that too!! Fair enough, though, if you'll be using that time for family jobs, life admin etc so that your stepping back will help the family.
