How much were you earning at 25?

Hi all. Just that really! I'm 25, graduated uni last year and have been working since. I have had jobs prior to this but they were all MW retail/waitressing type jobs. My current job is my first one in my desired/degree field.

I currently earn 21k. DP is 27 and earns 22k. We live in East Anglia. This is more than enough to support us and DD and we live comfortably, but a recent thread has left me feeling a little deflated, as people not much older than DP and I seem to be earning considerably more.

We both love our jobs and I know we have many years to develop our careers and salaries, but still, it is a little disheartening!

How much were you earning at 25, and how much are you earning now?

Thank you 😊

Graduated from first degree in 1993 £8000
PGCE for a year then first teaching post £15400 in London suburbs 1995
Second post in teaching in 1997 - 19000

Then supply, then office temping I think about 18,000?

More supply

Various low paid arts stuff whilst I tried to manage a developing disability that affected my mobility

Returned to teaching 2017 £29,000

Supply

Started studying tech to try and find different career
Current tech related post £20000 2021

So, mine are clearly affected by my mobility problems that threw me for 6 plus some caring responsibilities and time in another country.

MmeSosostris · 02/02/2022 21:10

Sorry, at 25 - earning about 18,000 I think

JammyRascal · 02/02/2022 21:16

21k at 25, same as yourself.

33 now and on £38k. Same industry, just higher grade from working my way up.

About 100k

roastingmichael · 02/02/2022 21:28

About 18k I think.
Now at 40, about 31k. It would probably have been more but I've completely changed career twice so had to start again.

jennymac31 · 02/02/2022 21:33

I was earning £27k when I got my 1st job after postgraduate course (I was 24) but I left the job after 2 months as my boss was a dick!

I turn 42 next month and am on £55k. You could say that I've had a squiggly career journey but my salary is higher than I had ever anticipated to earn.

sparklecrazy · 02/02/2022 21:40

Shock Christ, some of these salaries! I was on 18k at 25. Now I'm 40 and on 21.5k. Not much of a difference at all. DH also about18k at 25. Now at 40 he's on 26k.

trunktoes · 02/02/2022 21:45

I was probably on the same as you - now I am in 250k I am 48. Don't sweat it you have years left

cpox · 02/02/2022 21:48

25k
Marketing. Leeds

MmeSosostris · 02/02/2022 21:49

@sparklecrazy yep

FrugalFrancine · 02/02/2022 21:51

God hardly anything at that age. I also graduated at roughly that age - think I was 23. Then did admin for a non profit which obviously wasn't mega bucks. Think it was £13k or so, but that was back in 2008.

I did work my way up to about £22k plus bonus and then got made redundant on mat leave 😩. Yes, they can and do do that.

Anyway, I took a career break then and only got back to work properly after dc2 who is now four. I'm on £25k now pro rata, but doing part time hours while I retrain.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/02/2022 21:53

25 I was training for my current job. So was on 17,500 ish

Age 26 I had completed training and was on 35,000.

Now 43 and on 62,000 - same job

ByMyName · 02/02/2022 21:54

£48k at 25. Central London job, loads of overtime, tiny studio.

£100k at 35. South West, part time hours, children, own business.

LashesZ · 02/02/2022 21:54

25k, was earning 39k 2 years later. I did a lot of career progression in my late 20s

Are you part time and do you have qualifications? You both earn much less than the England average - the overall England median in 2020 was £31k and for people in their 40s just under £36k.

OP’s £21k is also lower than the median for her age group which is £26k.

longtimemuchchange · 02/02/2022 22:02

I am 25, just been offered £60k.

I left school without any A-Levels, no degree and have now achieved the highest professional qualification in my field. I got lucky and worked very hard!

newmum2be101 · 02/02/2022 22:06

When I was 25 I was earning 27k (am 27 now and earn £36k). Living in Yorkshire Smile

mrsed1987 · 02/02/2022 22:08

About 38k.

Fairylightsongs · 02/02/2022 22:09

I don’t think this is about what you earn now but what is your career projectory. What will you earn at 35 or 45?

countdowntonap · 02/02/2022 22:10

Same as @SausageRoll2020
£19,000 at 25 as I was in post grad education, but £60,000 by 35.

sparklecrazy · 02/02/2022 22:12

@SpaghettiArmsMurderer Both full time, no degrees just A Levels and a BTEC. Im in accounts and DH is band 4 in HMPPS. I'm aware we're below the average, just didn't really realise how high the average was Smile

DSGR · 02/02/2022 22:15

Next to nothing. Now 45k mid 40s

Snally82 · 02/02/2022 22:21
