How much were you earning at 25?

Hi all. Just that really! I'm 25, graduated uni last year and have been working since. I have had jobs prior to this but they were all MW retail/waitressing type jobs. My current job is my first one in my desired/degree field.

I currently earn 21k. DP is 27 and earns 22k. We live in East Anglia. This is more than enough to support us and DD and we live comfortably, but a recent thread has left me feeling a little deflated, as people not much older than DP and I seem to be earning considerably more.

We both love our jobs and I know we have many years to develop our careers and salaries, but still, it is a little disheartening!

How much were you earning at 25, and how much are you earning now?

Thank you 😊

£65k + age 40 self employed out of london

DillonPanthersTexas · 02/02/2022 18:56

At 25 I was on £26,500, but that was in 2001.

@Bunnycat101

stuntbubbles why do you think fantasy? I’ve shared my experience and have no reason to lie. There is nothing outrageous on the thread.
Because I like making jokes on the internet, mostly. Don’t get your giant salary in a twist

Comparison is the thief of joy as they day. We always want more than we have.

doadeer · 02/02/2022 19:05

I was a head of department on £65k plus bonus in london. Tech industry.

My salary now varies depending how much work I take on

spidersenses · 02/02/2022 19:06

A lot of salaries won't be comparable to wages 20 years plus ago. Wages would have been a lot less. I stated on £12k in London in my early 20's. Professional job as well! It rose quickly though and was doubled by 3 years later. But the point is it depends on WHEN people where in their early 20's - the 90s, the 00s etc. - as well as the industry they were in.

redpickle · 02/02/2022 19:06

I always earned my age until I was 31 and had a baby, so at 25 I earned £25k. I've had to make so many (willing) compromises on my career that now I earn the age I wish I was!

itssquidstella · 02/02/2022 19:07

£30k at 25, having been on £24k the previous year. I’m now 36 and on just under £78k, although I’m going on maternity leave soon and will go back on four days a week so won't be earning as much 😩

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 02/02/2022 19:08

£60k or thereabouts
Then over ten years moved up to £250k
Then down to £73k
Now on £120k+

Law

Justkeeppedaling · 02/02/2022 19:09

When I was 25 I earned £7k, but that was 35 years ago.

DD is 24 and she earns £28k

spidersenses · 02/02/2022 19:10

Was curious and I googled. And my £12k in London in the late 90s would now be around £18 to £22k.

itssquidstella · 02/02/2022 19:11

Should say, I’m a teacher (private school) in London.

Elsiebear90 · 02/02/2022 19:13

I was earning around 60k, as I was locuming, decided to have a career change when I was 27 and had to take a pay cut, now earn 40k at 31, but I’m much happier.

eurochick · 02/02/2022 19:15

A mix. I spent the first half of 25 on a training grant of £5k over 6 months. I then qualified and lucked out with a job for £60k. I hit 6 figures at age 30, but have had various ups and downs since then.

Houseplantmad · 02/02/2022 19:15

£30k - 32 years ago in a City job I didn't really enjoy. I went in with a plan to stay for 3 years to enable me to buy a flat and benefit from a subsidised mortgage which was a perk. Left as planned and got a job paying £13 which I loved!
£51k now in a completely different sector.

EcoCustard · 02/02/2022 19:18

At 25 I was earning 27k I wasn’t in a profession just worked a lot of overtime.

41 now and sahm, studying a degree part time (retraining) and earn nothing.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/02/2022 19:19

DD is 23, graduated last summer. Started as a TA through agency. Just been successful for a permanent, higher graded TA role £24k. She is debating whether to start sponsored teacher training in September or a Masters in speech therapy.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 02/02/2022 19:20

£37k, that was 2 years ago and now on £50k - London, civil service. When I first graduated I had recruiters contacting me with jobs paying £21k and I wouldn’t even entertain anything below £25k, but I know that is a privilege because I could move in with my parents rather than having to take any old job to avoid homelessness. What sector are you in?

lemondrop21 · 02/02/2022 19:21

Dh is 26 and earns 49k. I'm a sahm. So £0 at 26.

catlovingdoctor · 02/02/2022 19:22

About £40k, tax free, so for accurate comparison £55k, as was working in the Middle East.
Now at 28 probably earning no more than &5k a year as I've gone back to uni to do another degree.

Overthebow · 02/02/2022 19:24

At 25 I was on around £25k. Now early thirties and I’m on £48k.

FredBair · 02/02/2022 19:24

Not me but my DC.
DC1 is 26 and a teacher, earns around £31k.
DC2 is 23 and works (from home) in tech and earns £33k
I expect DC2 to end up as a high earner but DC1 loves their job far more.
