How much were you earning at 25?

Hi all. Just that really! I'm 25, graduated uni last year and have been working since. I have had jobs prior to this but they were all MW retail/waitressing type jobs. My current job is my first one in my desired/degree field.

I currently earn 21k. DP is 27 and earns 22k. We live in East Anglia. This is more than enough to support us and DD and we live comfortably, but a recent thread has left me feeling a little deflated, as people not much older than DP and I seem to be earning considerably more.

We both love our jobs and I know we have many years to develop our careers and salaries, but still, it is a little disheartening!

How much were you earning at 25, and how much are you earning now?

Thank you 😊

@MmeSosostris what industry are you in, how often have you changed jobs, how good are you at asking for a raise every year?

D0lphine · 02/02/2022 18:32

£15,000. 8 years I earn £65,000. Northwest.

Hen2018 · 02/02/2022 18:32

I was still at university.

Would posters say the industry they are in?
Fantasy, mostly.

SeasonFinale · 02/02/2022 18:33

OP - whereabouts in East Anglia as there are obviously massive variations in salaries between say Cambridge and Great Yarmouth?

At 25, I had just increased from under 9k to 12k in old Punts (so equivalent to €11,400 up to €15,230).

23 years later, I am on €89k.

CatJumperTwat · 02/02/2022 18:34

Why not look up statistics instead of asking a self-selecting sample here where people can lie? If you've spent five minutes on MN you'll know this thread won't help you stop feeling deflated...

Studying and a single parent

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 02/02/2022 18:36

At 25 I was still studying. At 48 around 90k.
My first graduate job was 24k. Ridiculous 20 years later that this is the same.

GiantSpider · 02/02/2022 18:37

I was on around £30k (finance, London) when I was 25.

Now I'm 47 and on nearly £50k FTE (I work part time). That's after a career change - I would be earning more in my old job.

JammyC · 02/02/2022 18:39

Just to add before you worry, the salary you are on is very much to be considered alongside your outgoings.

So for example I was earning more than you at your age but I had to pay an extortionate rent, had high commuting costs and for that reason we waited until 29 to start our family. We lived in our overdraft, had several credit cards and lived pay check to pay check.

If you feel you are living comfortably with your child on those incomes that’s ok! You may have lower outgoings, help with childcare, low commute costs etc.

Whelmed · 02/02/2022 18:40

I was on 16k at 25. I'm now on 25k.

Bunnycat101 · 02/02/2022 18:42

stuntbubbles why do you think fantasy? I’ve shared my experience and have no reason to lie. There is nothing outrageous on the thread.

Simonjt · 02/02/2022 18:42

At 25 about £47k, £17 of that was a sports contract. I was in my final year of professional exams at 25, the industry I’m in pays very well during training.

£21k is good for 25, especially in the very start of your chosen career.

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 02/02/2022 18:43

About £17k but that was about 25 years ago! Salaries haven't risen much in some sectors.

It's a bit pointless asking people on here. Some of us are getting on a bit!

How does your salary compare in the local jobs market? Are you being paid market rate? I can't imagine salaries are particularly high in East Anglia. If you want to earn more you probably need to be in London or the South East but that comes with eye watering house prices.

Latara · 02/02/2022 18:45

At 25 I was a student nurse doing the Advanced Diploma, I think my Bursary was approx £6k a year? Possibly a bit less.
We didn't get student loans & obviously parents didn't contribute.

I also worked on the hospital bank as an HCA part time and I think I earned upwards of £50 a shift, sometimes up to £100 on a Sunday or bank holiday or night.

I worked at least one shift a week as an HCA during my student nurse hospital placements, lots more during annual leave & university study weeks.
I never kept a record of how much I actually earned in total.

I also had a £3k free student overdraft facility.

So all that was enough to rent a room sharing facilities with 5 others... buy food & clothes and have a good social life.
I didn't have a car or go on holiday anywhere until I qualified.

MinglingFlamingo · 02/02/2022 18:45

15k ish

A few years down the line and I'm still in the same job which whilst poorly paid I mostly love. Essen a little more due to taking on a bit more responsibility

KittenKong · 02/02/2022 18:45

About 36k - it was in the city and I was managing a team by then (and it was a million years ago). Was always earning well above my 'age' in £.

Then came career break...

Nontransfer · 02/02/2022 18:46

When I was 25 my life's ambition was to earn five figures (£10k). It was a long time ago Grin I'm now on £50k for part time work.

stuntbubbles · 02/02/2022 18:47

I was on £18k at 25. Now 41, I’m on… £26k. Difference is I only work 3 days a week now Grin

onthinice · 02/02/2022 18:51

At 25 I'd just graduated and was in my first full time job earning £14k a year. 15 years later I'm on £20k full time. That's after having had 6 years out of work to raise children and then 6 more years doing term time only part time work. At 40 I am only now starting off in my career and hope that in 5 years time I'll be on closer to £30k.

wendz86 · 02/02/2022 18:51

I was on about 20k but had cut down to 4 days after maternity leave so would have been 25k full time .

Latara · 02/02/2022 18:53

How much am I earning now at 45... not much.
I was a qualified staff nurse for 8 good years on up to £26K approx plus overtime then got very ill with Schizoaffective disorder in 2012.

Now work part time as an HCA again, still poorly with mental illness on & off.
Earn approx £900 - £1100 a month depending on unsocial hours payments.
So approx £12K pa.

Get £240 PIP a month for epilepsy but now have to reapply so could lose that or could be awarded more... very worried.

You never know how life will turn out.
