Birds flying into my windows

What can I hang at my window to stop this that’s not nets? I’m not kidding there are 4-5 hitting my kitchen window each hour, and my windows are not sparkling clean! Grin

When I had this problem I rang the RSPB and they suggested cling film on the inside of the window. They said the birds were seeing their reflection and perceiving the 'other bird' as a threat. The cling film distorts that reflection.

I don't know if it works, the birds lost interest before I got round to sticking the cling film up.

toppkatz · 31/01/2022 15:32

Blimey, what sort of birds are they?!!

I've had this happen maybe twice in 30-odd years where I live.

SuperSocks · 31/01/2022 15:34

They'll be attacking their reflection. Not sure what you can do really. Maybe a bird of prey decoy? You can get ones that move in the wind so look quite offputting for smaller birds.

DappledThings · 31/01/2022 15:40

@whoruntheworldgirls

You can buy stickers, though i don't think many people like covering their windows in them them: smile.]]

We have these ones, the slightly 60s looking stylised ones that are the first result on that search. I like them!

Hmm. Something went weird with the link when I quoted the post.

Justkeeppedaling · 31/01/2022 15:43

Happens a lot here too. We back into a woods and the birds fly out of the wood into our window. They usually kill themselves 🙁 and we have a sort of smeary bird/crucifix outline on the window until we get round to cleaning it, or until the window cleaner comes if it's upstairs.

Wood pigeons in our case. So quite big.

SockFluffInTheBath · 31/01/2022 16:21

@toppkatz mostly sparrows, some blackbirds. My garden’s like the local wild bird soup kitchen so there are loads of them here.

Thanks everyone, I’ll try the cling film first before stickers or scary fake birds.

Cat stickers?

hedgehogger1 · 31/01/2022 17:57

Every bloody time I have my windows cleaned a fucking pigeon flies into them before I've even seen em clean. I know because they leave big greasy pigeon prints on my window. You can see the shape of the wings and everything

I like them, i just know people I've mentioned them to in the past weren't keen, i guess just didn't want stickers on their windows. I'm thinking of getting a few, recently had a huge pigeon hit the window, thankfully it was fine but my word did it make me jump!!! Just don't want to stop them visiting the feeders.....
Billandben444 · 31/01/2022 18:28

Yup, wood pigeons here as well. Thick bastards.

RuthTopp · 31/01/2022 18:28

We have a large window at the back of our house . When it's very sunny the garden / sky is reflected in it .
I am convinced that the birds think it's just the rest of the garden / sky and continue to fly . We get a fair amount fly into ours , putting bird stickers has helped a little , but we still get them . Sadly a few die .

SockFluffInTheBath · 01/02/2022 15:56

Tried the cling film today and not one bird has hit the window! Looks bloody awful though so will try an alternative…

Wood pigeons here, they fly into our windows and a couple have gone into the top bar of the kids wooden playframe. They didn't survive.

Same here. So it happens about once every eight weeks for me! Sympathy OP, not sure what you can do.
Cherrysoup · 01/02/2022 16:11

Fake sparrowhawk model. You can get them on eBay. We got rid of fake Georgian windows with plastic strips, replaced them with big clear panes and occasionally get wood pigeons hitting the kitchen window, but they never kill themselves.
