Can anyone identify what this is? The dog has just brought it in to the house and it smells absolutely fucking awful. I'm guessing it's some sort of bone?

He's been ill on and off for 6 weeks.. currently waiting for blood results from the vets and I'm wondering if I've found the source!!
🤢🤮

It looks like salt fish! Is it hard?

JustWonderingIfYou · 31/01/2022 13:25

Looks like sheep/land bone

anotherdaynotanotherdollar · 31/01/2022 13:30

It is hard. It's defo from the garden. It's quite a big garden in terms of it raises up with flowerbeds/shrubs etc but I would not expect to find such a large bone. Garden entirely enclosed.

Bit worried about what else maybe out there!

Could someone have thrown it over into your garden? It looks butchered rather than scavenged off a carcass.

Unlikely I'd say, as the garden has a high, thick hedge at the back and fields behind it. I'd like to think the NDN wouldn't chuck bones over!! Very bizarre.

Could have been scavenged from a bin by a fox and brought into your garden that way. Looks like an animal bone to me.
Hope your dog feels better

SoupDragon · 31/01/2022 13:49

Foxes could have dragged it from elsewhere and left it in your garden.

Mine came in with something similar but more rank that that and ate it before I could wrestle it off him. (He was fine - he has a cast iron stomach)

Saucery · 31/01/2022 13:50

I think foxes too, then.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 31/01/2022 13:56

Can you email the pics to the vet? They might be able to identify it.

MintJulia · 31/01/2022 14:38

It looks like a lamb shoulder bone to me. I imagine a fox raided a bin, then buried it, and your dog has dug it up. It isn't old and bleached if it still smells, it looks gnawed.

anotherdaynotanotherdollar · 31/01/2022 20:26

Possibly a fox hiding it then. It was proper grim. I actually spoke to our vet this afternoon as she had his blood results in. Looks like a problem with his small intestine as low B12 and folate. He's only 10 months. Told her about the bone and she was nonplussed where I'm still grossed out. If it was just a bone I could cope.. the smell however... 🤢

Definitely shoulder of lamb I think?

EcoCustard · 31/01/2022 21:38

Looks like the cow bones that I get mine from the butcher. It’s well chewed though.

steppemum · 31/01/2022 21:42

looks like a fox bone.

As in the fox got it from the bin and took it somewhere quiet to eat.

It stinks becuase it is not fresh!

anotherdaynotanotherdollar · 31/01/2022 22:29

Oh it's definitely not fresh. It has green slime/algae type crap on it. And the smell 🤮

I think it's a lamb shoulder bone.
