This is a crap day for a Jubilee holiday

All schools have a discretionary day's holiday to add to this school year to celebrate the queen's platinum jubilee. DD's school chose today Confused It's cold, raining, windy and generally miserable.

AIBU to wonder why they didn't choose a day in the summer when the kids could have a picnic, go to the park, play outside etc.? Instead, I'm at work as usual while my parents look after her. I'm sure she'll have a lovely time with them but it just feels like a waste of a holiday.

Sounds like they just wanted to get it out of the way.

Doidontimmm · 31/01/2022 07:38

Because they already have loads of time off in the summer?

QforCucumber · 31/01/2022 07:38

Ds school was the 3rd January, they extended the Xmas holidays for it while, like you, DS had to go to MIL and I had to go to work. Seemed a bit pointless for us, sure it was great for the teachers

Nothingfree · 31/01/2022 07:38

Totally agree it's a waste.

ItsSnowJokes · 31/01/2022 07:39

I think a lot of schools have chosen today for some reason. My child's school is closed today as well. Its so odd, why not just stick an extra day off in May half term.

ClariceQuiff · 31/01/2022 07:39

It seems an odd choice as the celebrations aren't kicking off until May, and I agree about the weather. Did they say why they chose today?

userxx · 31/01/2022 07:39

Agree, strange choice. It's absolutely wild out there today.

BrieAndChilli · 31/01/2022 07:39

Ours is in the summer but helpfully the secondary school has chosen a different day to the primary school so we can’t even really take full advantage of it eg go away for a long weekend etc

purpleme12 · 31/01/2022 07:40

I thought there was a specific day for it later in the year

KindergartenKop · 31/01/2022 07:42

Because of the teachers wanted a duvet day rather than a picnic day. They're probably knackered!

ClariceQuiff · 31/01/2022 07:43

Obviously they couldn't have known for sure what the weather would be like, but there'd be more chance of a half-decent day from May onwards.

It pissed it down for the Golden Jubilee in June 2012 - anyone remember the regatta with everyone absolutely drenched? The bedraggled choir singing 'Land of Hope and Glory' was possibly the most British thing I have ever seen.

The official bank holiday for the jubilee falls within half term, so presumably schools have been given a day in lieu of it? Seems a bit odd as to my knowledge they don't get days in lieu for all the other bank holidays that fall outside term time (which is all of them aside from Mayday, if I'm correct).
BlowDryRat · 31/01/2022 07:46

No, they didn't say why. DS's school has a different day, 6th June, which actually makes sense.

Ours was November 26th. An equally rubbish day and when half the school was off relating to Covid anyway. A waste of a holiday and like you i would rather have had it during the summer when there were at least more daylight hours to take advantage of.

RoseIrisLily · 31/01/2022 07:50

Ours is May - YANBU, I guess it’s an attempt to break up the winter but a bit rubbish.

My only objection to May I’d it’s a short half term (5 weeks) with a bank holiday. I’d far rather break up the endless last half term with it!

RoseIrisLily · 31/01/2022 07:51

You’re not Lancashire are you @TwoleftUggs?

mistermagpie · 31/01/2022 07:54

They have stuck ours onto a holiday weekend at the start of June (think it should have been the end of May weekend but they've moved it) so we get three bank holidays - Thursday, Friday and Monday. I'm quite looking forward to it. I assumed everyone would get it at the same time!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/01/2022 07:55

Extra day added to the beginning of the summer holidays here.

MoggyP · 31/01/2022 07:57

That's weird - it's an extra bank hol for everyone isn't it ?

So is this way of giving schools a day off (as bank holiday is in summer half term)? I thought everyone was hell-for-leather 'kids needs to be in school to make up for all they have missed'

Maybe that's why now - before anyone changes mind again

Lampshading · 31/01/2022 07:58

Her actual jubilee is next Sunday, maybe they got the dates mixed up and meant next Monday so the day after? Confused

AndPeggy08 · 31/01/2022 07:58

My kids are off today too in lieu of the jubilee bank holiday - totally pointless having a day off in the middle of winter and would have been far better tagged onto May half term.

Porcupineintherough · 31/01/2022 07:59

Our had an extra day before Christmas which was fine in principle. Unfortunately for us ds2 had already tested positive by then. Ah well.

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 31/01/2022 08:01

I didn’t know about this. My children’s school must have added it to a school holiday at some point which is fine by me.

MummyMe87 · 31/01/2022 08:01

Odd time to have it. My boys school have added it to May half term plus an inset day, which means they don’t go back until midweek and we can get a slightly cheaper abroad holiday as will do Tuesdays to Tuesday

MooSakah · 31/01/2022 08:02

Weird day to have it and what if she doesn't make it to the jubilee.
