Does everyone on here have a high salary?! (And if so what do you do?!)

Sweatshirtaddict · 30/01/2022 16:21

Since joining MN it seems like everyone posts about having high earnings etc but at my work high paid jobs of like 100k are for directors with 30+ years of management experience with masters and doctorates (and as most orgs its like a pyramid hierarchy so only 2 top jobs and loads of staff at the bottom).

Where is everyone else working to earn these amazing salaries?! I thought earning 24k for an admin job was not bad considering some admin jobs in my area are around 18k - 20k but it seems like I must be doing something wrong not to be earning mega bucks!

Anyone else? Grin

I don't even work at the moment due to ill health, but I love these threads because loads of women will pile in to tell you how much their husband earns as if it's their own job...

Campervan69 · 30/01/2022 16:26

I'm a lawyer so earn more than my husband who has his own landscaping business.

lilybunnyc · 30/01/2022 16:27

We are a two earner household. Both of us are lawyers in private practice.

camperqueen54 · 30/01/2022 16:28

I earn £50k ( not my husband, he's on £40k) that's probably not a high salary on here though!

Newyearnewme2022 · 30/01/2022 16:28

I think there might be a few porkie pies told on MN. Don’t believe all you read.

Ligglepiggle · 30/01/2022 16:28

Not the mumsnet 6 figures but I earn 50k as a bank manager. Considering I left school at 16 I think this is a decent salary. Lone parent though so it is the only household income

TheBigPeachy · 30/01/2022 16:28

Honestly I always thought I was on decent money before mumsnet.
I'm just back to my prekids salary of 33k (had to build back up to full time after being a sahm and doing an MA) my job is going through an evaluation process to higher banding though and successful I will go up to over 40k which would be a big help.
I have two friends earning over 100k rest of us are 20-45k

Nofilter · 30/01/2022 16:28

Ha! I wish I had a husband I've done it on my own and am 40. I ran music events until I had my DD at 34 and now am a portfolio landlord plus an Airbnb host of a holiday cottage in wales. It's HARD work. And sometimes I dream of a 9-5 actually having adults to speak to and something for myself. I'm 100% at home but yes we are very well off and I won't mention numbers...

Money really isn't everything.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 30/01/2022 16:29

I work in corporate communications in big pharma, I’m relatively senior.

Arbeity · 30/01/2022 16:31

I think you need to get out of admin if you want those sorts of salaries. The only people I know like that cake out of uni with a specialism that lead to a highly paid grad scheme role (eg in finance earning £50k) and rose quickly up the corporate ladder from there. Or they are older and started in technical roles before going into senior management at prestigious engineering companies ( involving long stints working abroad)

Lovinglife45 · 30/01/2022 16:32

At my place of work, at least 40% of senior managers are as young as 35 earning well over £100k. Most have 1st class degrees and a masters.

I on the other hand have a second class degree which has served no purpose but am contemplating returning to education in order to change careers.

I am assuming you live outside London earning £24k in admin.

BaconOmelette · 30/01/2022 16:37

I’m definitely not in that bracket (8k part time in education).

My most financially successful friend earns about 50k, and I don’t know anyone on more than that. I’m obviously a bit poor and scuzzy by mumsnet standards, but in the real world I think we’re fortunate enough to be at least reasonably comfortable, even if we can’t always have everything we want straight away.

Enzbear · 30/01/2022 16:52

Real life wages here and we still live extremely well. No mortgages, dc left home.
MN wages are a smidgen exaggerated at times I suspect. I don't doubt that some people earn big money but the giveaway on MN is when they say something like they earn 150k for 6 hours a day but are extremely frugal.
In real life the people on big money earn 70k-100k are stressed beyond belief and spend most of that on having a lovely lifestyle to compensate- lots of holidays, new cars, big house, investments etc

BertieBotts · 30/01/2022 16:55

Something like 10% of UK households earn over 100k now I think - I can't find the actual stat unfortunately. But 1 in 10 and Mumsnet skews towards higher educated, more middle class.

But yes there are loads of lower earners on MN as well. Just tend not to go onto salary threads because it's depressing!

Vampirethriller · 30/01/2022 16:57

I'm not in work at the moment because I lost my job (business closed) and then covid fucked things up, but when I do the highest I've ever earned is £15,000 a year. I'd be lucky to get £10,000 when I can go back.

bluebear19 · 30/01/2022 16:58

I'm a recruitment manager earning 80k+.... but on maternity leave at the moment. I'd give it up in a heartbeat to stay home with my son. But we can't afford for me to... so back to work I gon😢

toppkatz · 30/01/2022 16:59

Lots of people post about their high salaries and multiple degrees, studying for their 3rd PhD, bought their own home outright aged 23 because they worked hard etc. I take it all with a pinch of salt, to be honest.

TheAverageUser · 30/01/2022 17:00

I'm a freelance Digital Projects Manager.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 30/01/2022 17:01

Very few people earn that where I live. The only person I know who is definitely on a six figure salary works away in London through the week.

I earn no where near, but am still studying. GrinOnce I’m qualified I’ll still earn no where near

JaninaDuszejko · 30/01/2022 17:02

DH and I are in that bracket but we both earn about £60k rather than either of us on a six figure sum.

TheNoiseIsDrivingMeMad · 30/01/2022 17:03

I don't work at the moment, due to health reasons. My husband is on about 27k. A friend of mine brags all the time about her husband, who according to her, earns a 6-figure salary. He doesn't at all.

Jtb5790 · 30/01/2022 17:03

Mumsnet also made me feel poor. I thought at 31 with a salary of 56k (I have no qualifications at all) coupled with my wife's 29k we were doing OK but I read a thread that made me feel like I was doing really, really badly. I'd take it all with a pinch of salt personally, in reality I don't know many other people my age doing this well. Compare yourself to your real life peers, not people on the internet. I reckon there's a few on here that tell porky pies as well lol

Jtb5790 · 30/01/2022 17:03

This tickled me. So true 🤣
Caramelvanillafudge · 30/01/2022 17:03

I don’t, particularly.

DH earns around 80. MN doesn’t think it’s a high salary unless you say it isn’t, in which case it is untold riches. He works in construction.
