Does everyone on here have a high salary?! (And if so what do you do?!)

Since joining MN it seems like everyone posts about having high earnings etc but at my work high paid jobs of like 100k are for directors with 30+ years of management experience with masters and doctorates (and as most orgs its like a pyramid hierarchy so only 2 top jobs and loads of staff at the bottom).

Where is everyone else working to earn these amazing salaries?! I thought earning 24k for an admin job was not bad considering some admin jobs in my area are around 18k - 20k but it seems like I must be doing something wrong not to be earning mega bucks!

Anyone else? Grin

Haha OP I'm with you. I thought I was on it at 21k (a little bit niche) admin 12 years ago! Now I earn much less as a TA in a primary.
Just to chip in with a DH salary - DH earns even less than me!

The intervening years were good when we had a business (fixing a specific car part) but not enormously well paid, we worked every hour God sent and the stress was very high!

I earn around £115k as a consultant sales director, currently work on export in beauty category, wfh, approx 30 hrs a week

No qualifications above GCSE level, but worked 50-60 hour weeks for a number of years when younger to prove myself (as most of my peers have degrees/masters)

Been in variations of this job almost 20 years but was poached for last 3 positions

After 3 redundancies DH became a SAHD a few years ago and I could not have got to this level without his support

We also have some properties that he maintains - mostly lived in by friends and relatives so way below market rent but he used his redundancy money to make sure he had some form of pension!

I can and have contracted over £500 a day. Some contracts go on for years.

London based Technology role

NotMyDayJob · 30/01/2022 18:22

I earn c. £70k (all in, no bonuses, senior manager public sector, master's degree educated). I haven't had a pay rise since 2017 though.

DH does earn (a lot) more than me, but I can hold my own. Although I'm currently working remotely and about to go on mat leave. It's unlikely I'll return to my job as I live too far for hybrid working (no I didn't just up and move during the pandemic thinking I'd be WFH forever; it's a long story) and I'm not sure I'd get the same salary in this part of the country.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/01/2022 18:28

I earn £9.50 an hour in a factory doing admin.

PattyPan · 30/01/2022 18:33

No six figures here but I earn £50k in a civil service type role. The grad scheme is open to people with a degree in anything and you would be on this salary after a couple of years.

PattyPan · 30/01/2022 18:40

I have no idea what you mean about taxable benefits? I have never been forced to pay tax on a taxable benefit that I don't use?

Presumably it’s stuff like eg I pay tax on the private medical insurance my employer provides for me which I don’t actually use. I am able to opt out though if I really wanted to pay less tax but I keep it just in case.

Lndnmummy · 30/01/2022 18:41

I am just about on 6 figures if my bonus is included. Work in financial services, Director level, London.

MinnieMountain · 30/01/2022 18:47

I’d be on £40,000 if I was FT. I’m a conveyancing solicitor in a support role. I’d need to go for partnership to earn more but I can’t be arsed Grin

caringcarer · 30/01/2022 18:56

I have a few income streams. I am a foster carer and get £30 tax free plus I have a btl portfolio and earn swino £42k gross plus since I turned 60 I get £8k from Teachers Pension gross and a bit of interest from shares. I earnote than DH who is on £64k salary plus £13k from his btl portfolio.

High?...

Just less than £48,000. - headteacher.
Honours degree, M.Ed - 26 years in education.

AnneElliott · 30/01/2022 19:02

I'm a civil servant and earn more than my husband. I earn nearly £70k but have been there over 20 years.

WaitingForEgg · 30/01/2022 19:09

I’m a doctor. I earn approx £60k in registrar training. In 2 years this will increase to approx £80-120k depending on hours.

I feel lucky to earn what I do, but medicine isn’t the career to enter for the money

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/01/2022 19:14

Oh I think it’s very varied. Someone was suggesting recently that there be a lower income board which I think is a great idea.

I think depending on your lifestyle, partners earnings and where you live, c 25k can be fine/more than fine, but it isn’t going to provide all that much in extras, or probably much freedom to save.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/01/2022 19:15

Oh - about 90k as a freelancer. Media. About 20 years into my career.

I work for the NHS, earn 47k which I think is a great salary.

SummerSazz · 30/01/2022 19:22

I'm an accountant working in M&A and in the mythical band. I'm FT and it's manic and stressful (never worked out how to do a 7hr day.... 🧐)

I'm a single parent and don't spend loads on holidays and cars as a pp said. Any spare money goes into my money purchase pension which isn't great.

IglesiasPiggl · 30/01/2022 19:26

I would earn a relatively high salary if I were full time, but pro rata to a sixteen hour week, term time only it feels a lot less.

Crystalvas · 30/01/2022 19:27

@Newyearnewme2022

I think there might be a few porkie pies told on MN. Don’t believe all you read.
Don’t judge everyone by your own standards.
Jackofallsorts · 30/01/2022 19:28

My basic is £175k and I earn roughly the same again as a bonus. I'm in Private Equity.

Crystalvas · 30/01/2022 19:30

@tiredanddangerous

I don't know any women who earn a six figure salary. I think it's probably actually quite rare, especially if they have children. I only earn 19k.
You don’t but I do. Depends on your circumstances and what industry you work in.
doadeer · 30/01/2022 19:31

Great money in my industry. I work in tech in London. If I worked full time 4/5 days I'd be over £100k. It's a cash rich industry.
