What are excellent communication skills?

I'm filling out job applications and everywhere says strong communication skills are a must. What does this mean exactly to you? If one does or doesn't have them, how do I demonstrate that on my application? If I don't have them how can I gain better communication skills?

I suppose it could be a few things, depending on the job.

Some examples may be: clear, concise written skills that get the message across, friendly and engaging conversation, the ability to communicate with a range of audiences appropriately, confidence in speaking publicly or at meetings, being able to give instructions clearly, approachability, asking for help when needed rather than struggling or covering up the issue, maybe fluent use of IT for communication

I would try and work out what comms skills will be involved in a given job, and then try and demonstrate examples of you using them in other settings
