He's 10 - and watches PrestonPlays etc on YouTube and wants to record himself playing and chatting shit about minecraft

He plays on Xbox on the TV rather than on a laptop or pc.

Google is leaving me more confused - he's got some birthday money to spend but I don't want him blowing a load!

He's just got a new tablet so maybe a set up to work with that?

Do you mean just recording himself to make a video, or to put it online? You may want to rethink online for a 10 yr old. Any camera will record video now and most tablets have them.

My son used to record himself building Lego models. Only his hands were in it and he used his phone. I uploaded it onto my own YouTube channel.

If he is just recording his voice over playing Minecraft his tablet will do it with screen record. Make sure you put all the usual restrictions on the video you publish.

He only wants to pretend.

The people he watches seem to film the screen and have themselves chatting in the top corner.

Think he'd be happy doing voiceovers of him playing atm maybe?

I've seen blogging sets with tripods and wondered if they were what he needs

He can download clips of himself playing from the Xbox talking over it, he doesn’t need more than a headset with mic or just a mic.

we got DS one of these

Although it's expensive on here (we paid about £36). Meant to be a good one and I may poach it for my own business social stuff lol. Although seems excessive if he isn't sure. He also wanted a mic stand we got one for £10 on amazon it clips onto so he can move it around like he's in a studio!

Oh and you can get a phone holder with a selfie ring thing thing like this

www.amazon.co.uk/YouTube-Desktop-Streaming-Photography-Compatible/dp/B07QJXCB28/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=phone+holder+selfie+ring&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1643489331&sr=8-3

The light goes on their face so they can record while doing stuff with good lighting.
