Mel Gibson was never Australian?

Today I learnt that Mel Gibson is not and has never been Australian. I knew he became famous because of Mad Max, an Australian film. I assumed like other Australian actors, he’d become famous, and moved to the US for a Hollywood career.

I went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole and found out he was an American, born in America. He did live in Australia as a teenager and was a permanent resident.

Am I the only person who thought he was Australian?

According to Wikipedia Mel also has an Irish passport. He is extremely religious and conservative which seems to inform a lot of his personality and actions. Aligns much more closely with my experience of Americans than Australians tbh!

@toppkatz

Bagpipes weren't invented in Scotland. Grin
The Irish gave them to the Scots but they haven't got the joke yet Wink

@ShowOfHands

Hugh Jackman's Mum lives in Norwich which is like a beacon to beautiful people. It's why we didn't stay.
Just been reading how she left them when he was 8 Sad

I did know that MG was American but my mind was blown when I learned that Chrissy Hind from the Pretenders wasn’t French but American!

To me Chrissy Hind will always be French, she has a French accent when she sings!

SquirrelG · 30/01/2022 18:45

@CovidCorvid the South African accent is completely different to me, very angry sounding.

I agree - it's NOTHING like a Kiwi accent!

Chrissie Hynde nearly became British by marrying sud vicious for £50 for visa reasons.

I've never thought that?

@Juniper68 you’re not the only one. Think it was just me. When I was young (all those years ago) I thought she sang with a French accent!

She’ll always be French in my eyes 😆

I met a kiwi once who I thought was called Dibby because that’s what she told me her name was. Dh asked me why I called her Dibby. Turned out her name was Debbie. 😂

@AnotherPoster

I knew that about Mel Gibson because I was a fan of his in the 80s and 90s. Basically before he lost the plot. Also knew about Russell Crowe. I didn't know the UK had a claim to Hugh Jackman though. Can we have him please? I don't know if there is any dirt to be dished on the man but he seems pretty damp perfect in every way from where I'm standing.
No.
