Lost expired passport

I have been sorting stuff in the house and realise I have thrown out my old eu passport by mistake. It has the cut off corner and is the old colour and I have a new blue one.
Google seems to suggest I should still tell the police. Will this affect my new passport, ie will I have to get a new, new one? Has anyone else done this?
Should I just try the non emergency number tomorrow?
Tia.

Surely this is just for current passports? The passport has expired and therefore redundant.

Yes, that’s what I thought, but Google seemed to say different.
Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this. I know it’s cancelled, but still has details on it.

I think expired passports can be used to verify your identify for up to two years after expiry, lots of places like banks refused this but shouldn't. I know as I tackled a major highstreet bank when opening account for DC whose passport had expired. I checked gov.uk website and got my proof and went back to them and they had to accept it while grumbling the entire time.

However a quick Google and I can't find that link but did find this link below, which says that DBS checks will accept expired passport at the moment due to covid backlogs.

So all of this means that an expired passport is still a legal document, able to prove identity, so maybe that's why you should inform people?
