Dreams, can you control them?

Rubyupbeat · 28/01/2022 22:43

Following on from a nightmare thread.
I can quite often control my dreams, for instance if I am in a dreadful place, I know it's a dream, but I am terrified none the less, so can sometimes change where I am, or make the basty thing go away.
I can make myself fly etc...
I also remember vividly dreams I had as a child, and in them try to wake myself up.
Do other people know they are in a dream too?

Yes I quite often do. I love dreaming

TheLeadbetterLife · 28/01/2022 22:46

I can sometimes control nightmares, realise I am dreaming and wake myself up.

Fuuuuuckit · 28/01/2022 22:51

I wish I could. I have the strangest dreams, all sorts of adventures - some good, some definitely not so good. Wish I could control them so I didn't wake up sobbing at least one night a week!

whatnumber · 28/01/2022 22:55

Yes I can control them mostly too.
Handy sometimes.

Wisheverydaywasfriday · 28/01/2022 23:34

Yes, sometimes. I believe these are called lucid dreams.

ForgedInFire · 28/01/2022 23:40

I often realise I am dreaming in my dream, but start to wake up if I try to control what is happening. I would love to be able to control my dreams like other people can.

Spongeboob · 28/01/2022 23:48

If I nap during the day I have control over lucid dreams. Its quite interesting to see how far I can push it each time. At night, no deal.

Newbabynewhouse · 28/01/2022 23:53

Yes sometimes! I do the same...if i think inreally dont want something scary to jappen now..i can try and change it..then i usually end up waking up when im at the point of knowing that im in a dream...i have also found that thinkimg about what you dont want to dream about before you sleep stops you from dreaming about it ..soemthing to do with bringing thoughts to the front of your brain...

ofwarren · 28/01/2022 23:54

Yes, lucid dreaming. I can make myself wake up if I'm having a bad dream too.

blyn72 · 28/01/2022 23:58

Yes, sometimes.

falalalalalalablahblah · 29/01/2022 00:03

Yes, nearly always. I can also go back "into" a pleasant dream if I wake up from it too early / have the opportunity to go back to sleep.

Discwriter · 29/01/2022 00:07

Yes, I seem to have a hotel that features in many dreams. If its scary or someone chase me for some or other reason, I go and find my hotel in my dreams. Its really nice actually, its a lovely hotel!

Twinklights · 29/01/2022 00:10

Yes, sometimes I go through periods of realising I’m dreaming. I like doing things I’d never do in real life like getting arrested, stealing cars and jumping from building to building. I also like kicking random people in the bum and stealing there hats…. There’s probably something wrong with me.

Sometimes in dreams I find it really weird that I’m asleep and actually freaks me out so I try wake myself up other times I love it.

I’ve also tried using a phone to call myself in my dream as apparently you speak to yourself. I never get to the end of my phone number because it becomes really hard to type and I wake up which is weird!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2022 00:10

Yes, except sometimes when I realise I'm having a nightmare I wake myself up, can see the bedroom and everything but it's just another dream that then turns scary.

Just10moreminutesplease · 29/01/2022 00:12

No but my brain doesn’t let me have nightmares somehow. If things take a scary turn it kind of freezes and resets to be a comedic situation instead.

I remember a couple of lucid dreams from childhood and wish I could make it happen now!

KittensTeaAndCake · 29/01/2022 00:13

I can when I've had a good nights sleep for a few days. When I'm exhausted I can't.

Ricekrispiebun · 29/01/2022 00:20

I always found If I'm going through a tough time emotionally, my dreams can be pretty turbulent. Also it's strange but anytime I have lost a loved one or a pet, I dream about them almost a week later.

For the most part I never really remember my dreams but there are about 3 in my whole life that I still remember, one was from when I was a child and was the night my grandad died, I dreamt that my whole family were being chased by monsters. I've got a book on analysing dreams and it's really interesting

caringcarer · 29/01/2022 00:22

Yes, I can dream, wake up go to the loo and go back to my dream in the same point. Occasionally I can even carry the dream on the next day. I tend to have good dreams and very vivid too.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 29/01/2022 00:31

No and I’m quite jealous that so many people can. I suffered for years with the most awful nightmares.

eekbumbler · 29/01/2022 00:33

I carry all my dreams on the next time I go to sleep. Sometimes when awake I won't have remembered a dream but I slip straight back into it, it's the only way I can fall asleep. It's like an ongoing random saga. I don't control what I dream though. Deborah Meaden was having a go at me for buying her things with 20ps last night... I suspect I'll revisit her again in a bit when I sleep...

Furries · 29/01/2022 04:57

Urgh - double dreams are horrible. I’ve had a handful in my lifetime and it’s such an unsettling feeling.
Furries · 29/01/2022 05:04

My weirdest “aware” dreams are when I’m going to fly. I’m aware in my dream that it’s about to happen, it makes me nervous each time as in “here I go, I’m about to swoop around the sky again”. Haven’t found a way to stop it yet!

With nightmares, I definitely become aware at some point. My “answer” is to yell to wake myself up - I’m definitely aware that I’m trying to do this, however, in “real life’ (ie those present in my house) what sounds like yelling to me in my dream sounds like, in real life, a ghost trying to do opera.

Newbabynewhouse · 29/01/2022 13:33

@OhYouBadKitten

Urgh i have these dreams too! I wake uo and think..thank god for that...then something scary happens and i think "oh no this is real because i woke up" then i 'wake up' again and think thank god im awake.. then it happens again!! Confused lol so annoying when i finally do wake, i have to sit for a min and pinch myself i also get like twitches in my brain after these dreams and it only goes with a giant glass of water...
