Quinsy/peritonsillar abscess

How long for antibiotics to work for quinsy?

I have just finished the 2nd day x 4 times a day prescribed by GP. It has ruptured at least 3 times that I've noticed seeing the pus but seems to keep filling back up. My right jaw and ear also hurt every time it fills back up with the pressure. I have a head ache but no temperature and can swallow (albeit extremely painfully).

It started as a bad sore throat with headache Tuesday but not my usual tonsillitis. I have two young children, one is an ebf baby so don't have much time to rest and didn't take much notice until it got worse on Wednesday. Had a GP phone appointment Thursday morning where I sent him a picture of my mouth and he prescribed antibiotics.

I feel like it's going to keep filling up if I don't have it aspirated but don't feel like it is an emergency so don't want to clog up A&E just because it's the weekend and the GP is closed. Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what to do. Do I wait until Monday and give the antibiotics more time to work before ringing the GP again? I thought 48hrs would be enough to have an idea about whether they were working. I keep gargling Corsodyl and taking painkillers. Thanks.

Ah I'd give it another 24 hrs and if no relief go to A and E. That sounds miserable

It absolutely is an emergency. If I hadn’t bundled DSis into a cab when she was 15 and taken her when I did (useless mother of ours was drunk as usual), I dread to think what would have happened.

You may well just need IV antibiotics but DSis needed immediate drainage and surgery.

I have ended up in A&E with these about four times now. If you wait until the GP on Monday IME it will end up in them just sending you straight to A&E. It gets very painful very quickly. You are allowed to use A&E you knowThanks

I was admitted to hospital immediately with this. It needs draining properly. Go to hospital now. I cannot believe your doctor's has fobbed you off with antibiotics. You may also need a drip to replace fluids if you have not been able to drink enough. Sending you Flowers

It's your airway, it's really important.

Hopefully tonight will be a turning point and the antibs will kick in BUT if not I do think you should at least speak to someone tomorrow. There are things they can do like draining them and IV antibs.

If it interferes with your breathing enough to mess with your sleep then please take that seriously.
