Oh ffs - Nan bread - will we be ill?

Had nan breads tonight - best before today. Notice after we've had half that they're meant to be refrigerated - I didn't know that so they have been out on the side.

Also, there were bits of what could have been mould or black seeds/herbs in them - the ingredients didn't mention seeds at all 🙄 but the pic on the front of the packet showed black seeds...

But they smelled and tasted fine. Help!! Are we likely to be ill?

Does MN have the world’s allocation of vomit-phobes or something? I’ve never ever come across an emetophobe in real life but it’s a daily recurrence on here.

JaneJeffer · 28/01/2022 20:59

It's bread. It doesn't know what date some random person decided it would go off. You'll survive.

Ozanj · 28/01/2022 21:03

I make naan / roti / paratha from scratch at home - after cooking (supermarket ones are partly cooked) they shouldn’t be refrigerated as that can make them go off faster. Best to store them covered and in a cool dry place and they can last up to a week depending on the ingredients - the ones with yoghurt last a lot longer.

Mould tastes absolutely foul, how would you not have noticed??

Its because they have learned a word.

Can you name a single person who likes throwing up? No, neither can I.

But if you actively dislike it (again....who doesnt actively dislike yakking) you must be an emetophobe.

I have only met one person who is genuinely phobic about vomitting and it came from a very traumatic incident in her childhood.

givemepiece · 28/01/2022 21:26

First you say there were bits of what could have been mould or black seeds/herbs in them then it was we noticed while we were eating them that there was mould

So yes I agree that you're catastrophising (or however you spell it)

You'll
Be
Fine

givemepiece · 28/01/2022 21:28

Why aren't the seeds mentioned in the ingredients

Then

Have looked again at ingredients - there are seeds

Gahhhhhhhh!!!

Most likely you'll be ok, in my experience usually if anything is off it's just the trott s so to speak. Although conditions can vary.
spellingtest · 28/01/2022 21:41

@PyongyangKipperbang

I am phobic about being sick. I faint and require an injection from a doctor.

Trust me it's real.

RobertsRadio · 28/01/2022 21:50

I don't keep my Nan in the fridge, she says it's too cold. (I'll get my coat).

nordica · 28/01/2022 21:56

You would have noticed if they'd tasted off or mouldy.

I've never known of anyone getting food poisoning from any kind of a bread. I think you'll be absolutely fine.

NauseousNancy · 28/01/2022 21:58

They’ll be totally fine. Once I had some really old naan breads, the packet was all puffed up and when I opened them the smell was awful!

AngelinaFibres · 28/01/2022 22:11

@whiteworldgettingwhiter

They contain ghee, hence fridge.

Have looked again at ingredients - there are seeds - oh good - but there was definitely also mould - not so good.

Glad to hear that, @Motherhubbardscupboard!

Could you actually eat mouldy bread and be fine?? How??

I toasted some very mouldy bread as a student 35 years ago. One side was fine. The other side had grown its own special furry coat. Ate several slices with marg and jam before I realised . Absolutely no side effects. Was 21, am now 56. Definitely didn't die, throw up or have tummy ache. .
AngelinaFibres · 28/01/2022 22:16

I was in an ante natal group with a woman who was an emetophobe. I had hyper emesis throughout both my pregnancies. She was entirely freaked out by the presence of me. At 8 months pregnant I weighed 7.5 stone because I had been so appallingly sick so I didn't have the energy to care.

karlakourt · 28/01/2022 22:17

You'll be fine physically but your anxiety and irrational thinking sounds a bit high right now

karlakourt · 28/01/2022 22:18

Best before today! It'll be fine tomorrow and Sunday too

tkwal · 28/01/2022 22:21

Naan breads are often made with nigella seeds both for flavour and texture. Possibly the breads from the chiller would have been made with fresh yogurt rather than powdered but the temp naans are cooked at should kill any bacteria present. I would say that they advise keeping them in the fridge as it stops them drying out

I know one in real life. They never touch alcohol for fear it would make them sick, very careful with meat to avoid food poisoning, snack often so they're never at risk of the sick feeling that can come with being really hungry, and become incredibly stressed at any sign of nausea.

How many emetophobes are as badly affected, I'm not sure.

MiddleClassProblem · 28/01/2022 22:29

Ghee doesn’t need to be in the fridge…

Ozanj · 28/01/2022 22:45

Ghee is clarified butter. That means it’s made from a gazillian sticks of butter with the scum filtered off. Even made under the most unhygienic conditions it will not go off. It is designed to be able to sit forever on the side of a traditionally hot, smoky and charcoal ridden Indian kitchen. It’s why ghee and ghee preperations are / were used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Hugasauras · 28/01/2022 22:51

When I ate a mouldy yoghurt it def tasted of mould Grin No ill effects suffered, but I learned to look at the first spoonful of yoghurt when I eat it!

I dont doubt you for a second.

My issue is with people who say "I am emetophobic, I cannot stand beind sick". Well who can?! There is a massive difference between a phobia and not liking something. It pisses me right off when people misappropriate things like this, like the person who is "lactose intolerant" but actually just doesnt like cheese.....I am sure you know what I mean.

CrazyWantsALife · 28/01/2022 22:57

Wow, how utterly patronising to say an emetaphobe doesn't understand the difference between not liking something and being phobic.
I'm petrified of vomiting because I have learnt the word then, at least I know now.
Strange I didn't even know the word when I was 5 and became scared 🤷🏻‍♀️
I don't chose it, would do anything to not live this life so scared of it and have tried to help myself & failed.
I don't understand people being scared of spiders/holes etc but I never downplay their fear, it's very real to them.
OP you'll be fine, I've done the same, but I understand the worry.

SiobhanSharpe · 28/01/2022 22:58

And ghee does not need to be refrigerated, it's clarified butter and keeps for ages.
It's sold in tins that are put out on the ambient temperature supermarket shelves, not in the chiller sections.

WonderfulYou · 28/01/2022 23:24

I agree.

The absolute worst thing that will happen is you’ll get a tummy bug, which is highly unlikely as if it wasn’t mouldy enough to taste it won’t be mouldy enough to make you ill.

Your stomach acid kills most pathogens.
