Oh ffs - Nan bread - will we be ill?

Had nan breads tonight - best before today. Notice after we've had half that they're meant to be refrigerated - I didn't know that so they have been out on the side.

Also, there were bits of what could have been mould or black seeds/herbs in them - the ingredients didn't mention seeds at all 🙄 but the pic on the front of the packet showed black seeds...

But they smelled and tasted fine. Help!! Are we likely to be ill?

Why are you so worried about this? Are you usually anxious?

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 28/01/2022 18:54

That's the thing, @cakeambush (great name), some bits were round and bluey, not small and black...

@Wizzbangfizz - yes, emetophobia too...

I think you put them in the fridge because they are made with yogurt but im sure you'll be fine.....

Prescottdanni123 · 28/01/2022 18:58

Nan bread does have black seeds in. That's normal.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 28/01/2022 19:01

This is ridiculous. How many people have now said you will be fine?

Tillymintpolo · 28/01/2022 19:02

You’re being ridiculous

AppropriateAdult · 28/01/2022 19:02

I've never refrigerated bread, it doesn't usually do it any favours Confused
You'll be absolutely fine, OP - as others have said, even genuinely mouldy bread wouldn't make you ill. Not worth losing any sleep over.

Motherhubbardscupboard · 28/01/2022 19:02

I did exactly the same thing yesterday OP. I hadn't realised until I opened it that it said keep refrigerated. I can confirm we are all still alive Smile

Mamamamasaurus · 28/01/2022 19:09

I've never once kept naan breads in the fridge

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 28/01/2022 19:20

The some bits were round and bluey, not small and black... sounds a bit more worrying but since you've already eaten it there's not a lot you can do! But if it smelt ok you will probably be fine.

SkepticalCat · 28/01/2022 19:26

@whiteworldgettingwhiter

We did the same recently - didn't realise the naan breads said "keep refrigerated", so we kept them in the cupboard. In our case we went to use them several weeks after the best before date. Had they been normal "cupboard" naan breads I would have just eaten them and not thought twice about it, but as they should have been in the fridge, I threw them away.

In your case, just being on the BBE date, I wouldn't worry about it. Were they from Morrisons by any chance? As a previous poster says, I wonder what ingredient(s) makes them need to be kept in the fridge? I thought maybe ghee, or as someone else said, possibly yogurt.

OrangeShark27 · 28/01/2022 19:26

But you clearly didn't think it was mould when you ate it OP?

DappledThings · 28/01/2022 19:27

some bits were round and bluey sounds like you are catastrophising and misremembering to me. If it had somehow got magically that mouldy it would tasted and smelt wrong.

BungleandGeorge · 28/01/2022 19:29

The vacuum sealed naans with air removed last ages but you do also get ones which are meant to be refrigerated. I guess they don’t have the preservatives in that most loaves have. So similar to home made bread will go stale and mouldy more quickly. Bread mould is generally white/ green though so I think they were black seeds!

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 28/01/2022 19:32

They contain ghee, hence fridge.

Have looked again at ingredients - there are seeds - oh good - but there was definitely also mould - not so good.

Glad to hear that, @Motherhubbardscupboard!

Could you actually eat mouldy bread and be fine?? How??

Wbeezer · 28/01/2022 19:34

Eating a tiny bit of blue mould will not make you ill, people eat blue (mouldy) cheese all the time!
The best before and storage methods for things like bread are to make sure they retain their eating qualities not to avoid o poisoning.

DeathMetalMum · 28/01/2022 19:35

I've eaten mouldy bread before, not on purpose but definitely mouldy, realised half way through a crust had some mould on. I'm sure I've done it many times, making a sandwich or something on toast with the last few slices and not thinking to check. Even if it was a little mouldy you will be fine.

Stomach acid, for one
Stevenage689 · 28/01/2022 19:36

You must be catastrophising. If there was mould, you wouldn't have eaten it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/01/2022 19:36

I work in a supermarket and none of the nanns we have in are meant to be in the fridge, the only time it happens is if they are part of a meal deal or some sort of promotion.

In fact the more I think on it, I am sure I read somewhere that any sort of bread product will degrade quicker in the fridge.

MrsTimRiggins · 28/01/2022 19:37

Clearly it wasn’t mould. You’d have said at the start of the thread if it was, you’re just blowing it up in your head now.
You’ll be absolutely fine.

Tomeeornottomee · 28/01/2022 19:39

I never refrigerate naan bread, the best before date is a guideline, so no need to worry that they’re out of date. And shop bought ones always have the little black seedy things. I really fancy a curry with all the trimmings now

clareth · 28/01/2022 19:42

You’ll be fine, really, please try and stop worrying.

Forestdweller11 · 28/01/2022 19:43

I've always presumed that the keep refrigerated label on a supermarket takeway didn't mean the naan... So if the packet is not consumed I just chuck it in the back of the cupboard...
