Bad feeling about upcoming surgery

Having a surgical biopsy of calcifications of breast. I can't help but feel like something bad is going to happen. In fact I'm sure I won't wake up or similar. Can someone tell me I'm talking nonsense please? I've really managed to panic myself.

I’m sure it’s normal to feel this way before a large and unsettling event like surgery. Its maybe a type of intrusive thoughts. If you acknowledge and accept that you are having an intrusive thought, it can minimise it more than trying to fight them. You can focus on the facts / practicalities of going in for the surgery. Good luck, I hope you feel better.

I think this is probably fairly normal. I recently had surgery that was not absolutely essential and I got in a bit of a tiz about it as I had a feeling something bad would happen and was it worth the risk for surgery that wasn't life-saving. I decided my 'bad feeling' about it was just because I had too much time to think about it. Surgery was a month ago and I'm still here, if that's at all reassuring!

Hi SpiderHeart, I'm sure you already know this, but it's very normal to have these feelings. I've worked in surgical areas/theatre areas for years, and have never had a situation where someone doesn't wake up or even heard of it or any other disasters at close quarters.
I've had two operations myself and was feeling a bit 'oh oh' before too, it's a normal response. But I suppose being on the other side I also know how professional people are, and that all will be well.
I don't think anything I say will take away the worry for you, but try to focus on something other than those very negative feelings?
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

How did it go?

I felt like this last year, I was due to have a sub total colectomy in August and despite having had operations before was convinced I would not wake up. As it turned out I had the operation done as an emergency op in May. I don’t remember anything apart from saying is that the anaesthesia and the guy saying not yet (he lied) until Saturday (op was Thursday! However I’m here and operation was successful!
