What's the weirdest job someone you know does?

I mean the ones that you'd never heard of until someone you met/a friend of a friend said "oh yes I run a bat sanctuary/teach maths to prisoners/paint portraits of dead hamsters".

It was my first job in a well known high street retail shop. Rather than say you worked in the "denim" department (like most retailers) this particular company dished out titles like "Casual Bottom Specialist" instead. I would always want the ground to swallow me whole when customers would ask questions about the fit of certain pairs of jeans - at the fitting room - and the Fitting Room Specialist would say: "Oh I'll get our Casual Bottom Specialist to assist." I can still hear the sniggers now! 😀[/quote]
Ahhh! I was thinking casual like bank staff or temp! That almost makes sense then!

@Midlander88 Your dad is exactly what I'm looking for, but unable to find for a wedding later this year.

Catastrophe modeller - predicts what the worst outcome could be if for example a dam bursts.

I've stuck those little stickers on fruit.

KittenKong · 27/01/2022 15:56

Catastrophe modeller - I could do that!

My sister was a trapeze artist. Now retired!

Doesn't she do occasional work as a professional consultant to hang in there? Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 27/01/2022 16:16

I always remember seeing two weird job adverts many years ago: one for a 'head cutter' and one for a 'cabbage blower'.

I've still no idea what either of these are - and searching online yields nothing. Maybe they're now obsolete jobs that no longer exist?!

A head cutter could be an executionist? Hairdresser?

But more likely to be a supervisor in a pattern cutting situation, maybe a clothing or shoe workshop?

sweetbellyhigh · 27/01/2022 16:31

@KittenKong

‘I photocopy newts.

Why are none of these jobs suggested at careers day?

Because the opportunities for employment are scarce?
sweetbellyhigh · 27/01/2022 16:37

The couple who bought my last house were interesting, one was an interpreter for deaf people in crisis eg arrested or assaulted.

The other was a professional racing car driver. 😆

qualitygirl · 27/01/2022 16:39

@ChristmasPlanning it's a hard to explain it's a house/unit that essentially needs night staff due to it being a business. The people who "live" are temporary so a member of staff needs to be there at night to lock up and ensure safety but they are not required to be awake. It has an alarm system that alerts the police etc so this person is not a form of security either. It is just for insurance purposes and to ensure everyone is in bed. But also if someone dies a runner then this night staff is not required to look for them etc. They just call the police (this has never happened.

qualitygirl · 27/01/2022 16:40

*Does a runner.

So yeah...they get paid to sleep mostly 👍🤣

I know someone who sources corpse parts for medical students.
Not Burke & Hare style, but when people leave their bodies to medical science, those bodies need to get to the students that need to practice techniques.

I answered the phone last week at work and someone asked me if they could talk to a colleague about dormouse licenses. We work in planning so full but that was a weird phone call

Did they have quite a high, squeaky voice?

Can't believe PP's friend whose job was chopping the head off dead dogs. That's got to be one of the worst.

Head cutter - gardening, roses need dead heading and presumably so do many other plants. There are machines for cabbage blowing (ventilator things), presumably an operator for that: www.duijndam-machines.com/en/machines/86518/klima-ventilator-90-cm-7-4-kw/.

@HelloDulling

I once met a chicken sexer. Spent all day picking up new chicks and sorting into boys and girls. 🐥
I know someone who used to do that. The boys were then promptly thrown in the grinder Shock
