Washing veg & fruit

Hi everyone just looking for some advice please! How does everyone wash their fruit and veg during pregnancy? I’ve been using sponges (cheapy ones from Tesco) to clean hard things like potatoes, carrots, apples etc but I’ve just wondered if this is actually safe as could the sponges I’m using have chemicals and could be going into the food? They come in a packet and are clean as they’re new but it’s just made me wonder! Any advice would be appreciated:)

A sponge isn’t going to leach harmful amounts of anything in to your food so don’t worry about it, but that said, I’ve never scrubbed fruit / veg with anything apart from my fingers under running water so I don’t think you need to do that.

Only exceptions are carrots which I’d peel and muddy potatoes which I’d scrub

I use a veg brush for potatoes, carrots, etc
Other stuff just gets a rinse under the tap

I use potatoes still in skin that are obviously already washed when bought. I put them in boiling water for a while before using them, for added cleaning. I hope I'm correct in assuming that boiling water will kill all germs.

I just rinse under the tap Smile.

I don't use anything other than the tap and my hands.

Just run water over them for a few seconds. Didn't do anything different while pregnant, Certainly didn't use a sponge,

I didn't wash any fruit when I was pregnant. And I ate most veg with skins on without washing. Still don't. Still alive. So are my adult children.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 26/01/2022 14:03

PinkSyCo · 26/01/2022 14:05

I licked it clean.

I have always washed fruit and veg, just use the normal kitchen sponge I use for everything else if it's particularly dirty (like potatoes). Unless you are buying 100% organic food, there's probably more chemicals in the actual fruit and veg than in your sponge! But I would try not to worry about it. There are women who have only sewage polluted water to drink for their entire pregnancies. A bit of microplastic is going to do no harm in the bigger picture of things.
