Bacon lardons past their use by date?

Hi all,

Bit of advice required as I’m a bit unsure!

I purchased some bacon lardons on 19th Jan as there were reduced, they were put in my fridge ready for freezing and in all honesty I forgot about them until today 22nd Jan. I’m about to make bacon lardon pasta but I’m not sure if I should use them!

I’ve looked at them and there is no mould or discolour and I’ve just opened them and they seem to smell alright and I can’t see that they are slimy or anything, they just look like normal bacon lardons. The only thing putting me off a little is that they are now 4 days past their use by date and google basically says no!

What do MN’s think? Use or Chuck? The meal is only for me so no worries about giving food poisoning to any kids or other family members.

Thank you all!

I would (and have) used bacon and bacon products past their sell-by date. Especially if the look and smell fine.
It is a preserved product and can often last longer than the date on thr packet.
Fry them, taste a bit and proceed from there.

I've just used some that were out of date - roughly the same as yours. They were fine.

I did the sniff test, nothing untoward and they are happily bubbling away in a Ragu!

SittingOvation · 22/01/2022 15:49

I'd definitely use.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 22/01/2022 15:53

I've used these past their date. If they smell ok it's fine. You're going to be cooking them thoroughly.

Use it, it's fine. Bacon is designed to keep, that's why it's salted or cured.

Bacon will be fine, it's cured.

Just cooked up and served and absolutely fine! Thank you so much! I get a bit iffy and anxious about food sometimes so always like to check hahaha xx

I'd use that.

Yep they'll be fine
