Has anyone used a business/leadership coach? Was it helpful?

Hi mumsnet,
I’ve just started my first formal leadership role after a longer history of being a good mentor whose technical skills were respected. It’s for the same business.

I’ve got a new starter who may or may not be a good fit with me personally (I find interactions with them tiring whereas the relationship with the other four team members is simple and clear). My ultimate boss has made various half-promises to them already......I think I will need help making this work - it’s my first real challenge.

I’d be grateful to learn how others found help, what the buzzwords/job titles to look for are and whether it helped/was worth the time.

Yep, and I did find it helpful.

Executive coach, life coach are your search terms. The former can be v expensive as used to being paid by corps, a lot of life coaches can also help though. Clearly it’s an unregulated industry, full of people who are crap, but you can weed it out. Talk to 3 - 6 people and trust your gut. I have a v good life coach I have used, she is not at all corporate, but v practical and good at interpersonal stuff. PM if you want a contact.

Maybe think about whether management is for you if you find different types of people difficult to deal with

I think it’s the people under the illusion that they work equally well with all types of people who need to do that!
