Blind baby

Hi. At my babies 6 weeks check my baby is not looking at us in the face and is not following objects so the health visitor referred us to our GP. The GP looked in his eyes, he has red reflex in both eyes and his pupils change when in the light. They are concerned that he does not blink when the light is on his eyes and does not follow the light. We have now been referred to the hospital to find out if he can see or not.
Is there any mums out there with experience could he still be blind if he has red reflex and his pupils do change? He is also smiling when we talk to him ? Xx

I have no answers for you but didn't want to read and run. I'm sorry you're going through this, it must be terrifying 😞

There’s a condition called delayed visual maturation where babies who seemingly don’t see, actually do. It just takes longer. In the context of the article “response to light” means the pupillary light responses, which your baby has.

There’ll be lots of tests but the outcome may well be fine

I can imagine how scary this can be for you. On the plus side he is only 6 weeks old so still very young newborn.... all babies are so different they eye contact will come in time. Sending lots on love your way and hope you get good answers soon xx

Hi..I just wondered how you got on?? We have a 6mth old who has a turned in eye, development issues, doesn't seem to look proper at people or faces but can track objects and stares at his hands a lot. He coughs and sneezes in the light and doest blink when eye drops touch his eyes/you could technically poke him in the eye and he wouldn't blink. We are under paeds and awaiting opthalmology referral!
