Marmaris or Fethiye - Turkey?

berryconfused · 21/01/2022 12:30

Hello!

So I'm trying to decide between Marmaris or Fethiye for a holiday in April this year.

Where would be best, do you think?
Also, we are hoping to visit the bazaars and markets. Is there a place better for shopping than the other??

Thanks in advance!

marmaris is a decent sized resort with a good indoor permanent market a marina and plenty of bars and restaurants with icemeler on the same bay which is quieter and more village like, fethiye is pretty with a decent beach

NannyGythaOgg · 21/01/2022 13:22

Marmaris is far more commercialised and lively.
Fethye is more traditional, was a small town before people started holidaying there but still has plenty of lively bars if that is what you want. The harbour at Fethye is fabulous and there are plenty of boat trips (and scuba diving) going from it.

I actually prefer Hisaronu or Olu Deniz but would choose Fethye above Marmaris.

Both have good markets.

I know Fethye has a great fish market, where you can choose your own fish to be cooked in the local restaurants. I suspect Marmaris may have something similar but I'm not sure

We've just booked a hotel on Lara beach in Antalya. Looks like the warmest location in Turkey in April.

Got a fab deal on Jet2 for the 4 of us

Out of the two, I would also pick Fethiye, I love it there!

moleeye · 21/01/2022 13:33

Posted too soon!

Love both, but would choose Fethiye for the reasons outlined by previous posters

berryconfused · 21/01/2022 14:22

Thank you all! My OH loves the markets to get all of the replicas BlushGrin so wanted somewhere with a good bazaar or market so he can take a trip down there.
Would love somewhere with lots of trips, scuba and snorkelling sound fab!

Marmaris you can go over to Rhodes on the hovercraft for the day and they do trips round the bay on a boat, you can even go to Istanbul overnight on a coach from marmaris if your really adventurous, trips to ephusus (roman harbour huge) or pamakali can be arranged

MarieG10 · 21/01/2022 16:29

Mar Maris is awful...it was awful 30 years ago when I went as a child and it has only got worse. Fethiye is nice but there are also many other nice places depending on what you want.

If Benidorm is your place then Marmaris might work

HeyUpits2022 · 21/01/2022 16:38

Fethiye!!! Admittedly it's been a few years (6?) since I went but the town was lovely, lots of shops, cafés and bars. There are quite a few Turkish baths too, and the marina is also really nice.

Marmaris....couldn't wait to leave!

RunAwayNow · 21/01/2022 17:26

Definitely Fethiye! It's a proper town as opposed to a tourist resort. Calis is a place just nearby which is a bit more of a resort place but has a nice beach and stunning views.

There's a lovely island just off the harbour called Sovalye with a little restaurant, which is well worth a visit to get away from it all too.

Ladyladylady · 21/01/2022 17:55

Definitely Fethiye, the market is huge, the locals friendly and the marina/ waterside area has been really refurbished in recent years. We have a house in Hisaronu which is about 15 minutes away but spend a lot of time in Fethiye.

berryconfused · 21/01/2022 18:22

Thanks everyone! We have decided to rule out Marmaris, it doesn't sound like it's particularly up our street!! Thinking about Fethiye or Olu Deniz.. which would you say is best for shopping? 🤭 thank you! X

Definitely stick to Fethiye and avoid Oludeniz.

katscamel · 22/01/2022 03:32

Just a word of warning.... I went to Fethiye a few years ago....in April. It was lovely and there's a great fish market / restaurant bit but..... the weather was pretty awful. It rained and had to go and buy a sweater it was so cold. It was definitely the coldest April I'd experienced in my years of living/holidaying there.
Definitely think of packing something warmer just in case..... of ourse now I've said that it'll probably be the hottest April in history or something.

Einszwei · 22/01/2022 03:42

Avoid Olu Deniz ... I experienced so much harassment from the local men - both on the streets and from the workers at the hotel. Truly awful.

Smerk · 22/01/2022 06:48

Are you sure you want to go in April? If we go that early we go to Antalya for the weather.

berryconfused · 22/01/2022 07:10

Thank you all! Ohh I'm gutted about the weather! 🥺 I looked online and is says it's likely to be around 21-25degrees but I know that's just estimated.

Antalya - is that side guaranteed to be warmer earlier on in the year..? I've not been before, do they also have lots of shops, markets, bazaars etc? It's what my OH is really looking forward to 🤭

Deifinatly Fethiye. Oludeniz used to be heaven on earth, sadly it gets more commercialised every year. Still worth a visit though.
