Is dress code at the opera same as the theatre?

We are regular theatre goers but this weekend are taking advantage of Opera North's cheap seats for first time attendees.

I'd normally wear 'nice' jeans and a top or jersey dress and ankle boots.

Do I need to make a bit more of an effort?

Yes it is. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I saw a chap in a dinner jacket at the Royal Opera House a week or so ago - he stuck out like a sore thumb!

You can wear whatever you like, you won’t be turned away or looked askance at and there will definitely be other people at the casual end of smart-casual; equally there will be people dressed up for the occasion.

I tend to go dressier simply because there aren’t very many places where I do and it’s part of the evening and experience. But it definitely isn’t ubiquitous.

You just wear whatever you want to , same as the theatre

I've literally never even thought twice about what to wear at the theatre to be honest!

Thank you 😊

I feel like the opera would call for velvet. I would wear a pair of black tailored trousers, cashmere roll neck and my rather lovely black velvet jacket.

It's - strange thing. Most dress normally ie jeans or smart casual some go the whole hog and dress right up but I think those are the ones that don't normally go. Unless the royals are there or it's opening night dress casual

Everyone goes really glam to the opera house near me!

You wear whatever you like! No need to dress up.
