Do other people talk to birds when they're out and about?

Like blackbirds, robins, bluetits etc? Obviously always wave at magpies.

I was walking back from the shop today, headphones on, walked past a blackbird pair and just generally said hey guys how's it going, and did a little whistle. As I usually do. A man walking his dog overtakes me and looks into my face saying hello, in a questioning way, looking a bit concerned as if I'm barmy.

Do other people not say hi to birds? Same with random cats, squirrels etc?

I don't, but I think it's lovely not weird that you do.

Ethelswith · 20/01/2022 12:13

Only to salute magpies

Bluebluemoon39 · 20/01/2022 12:14

Well I salute magpies and I also talk to a little robin that visits my garden but I'm not sure about random birds otherwise. I do have a full on conversation with a cat that lives down the road regularly though! I swear he talks to me 😂

Only if dd's with me, makes me look less mad.

Etinoxaurus · 20/01/2022 12:15

Definitely, all the time!

Inthesameboatatmo · 20/01/2022 12:15

Not strange at all . I chat to all manner of wildlife if and when I see them

astoundedgoat · 20/01/2022 12:15

I do. Mostly ducks and swans in the river, but also smaller birds too. Also any cats I pass, obviously.

Isn't this completely normal?

Anyway you have to have strong words with geese or they'll attack you. Everybody knows that.

Vampirethriller · 20/01/2022 12:19

Yep. Usually along the lines of Hey Tweety, how's it going.

PeskyRooks · 20/01/2022 12:23

Yes I say hello to everything like "hello mate!" to a bird if it comes near me. Also I might say "Watch out!" to a squirrel if it runs across the road or "Alright! Calm down!" If a pheasant does that honking flying up out of a hedge thing!

Malariahilaria · 20/01/2022 12:27

Completely normal. I speak to all animals in a conversational tone when out and about. When I scuba dive I also wave at fish. I talk to my cats all day long. I like animals far more than people.

RoisinD · 20/01/2022 12:28

Yes, robins, sparrows, blackbird etc. Love crows interaction especially when they seem to squawk back 😁

Boood · 20/01/2022 12:30

I am unable to walk past a duck without quacking at it Blush

Shapiro · 20/01/2022 12:32

I talk to all animals. Cows and horses in particular are the best listeners.

canyon2000 · 20/01/2022 12:32

I talk to all the animals! Luckily no-one is ever around when I walk the dog!

Magissa · 20/01/2022 12:33

Yes all the time not just birds but squirrels cats and dogs too.
I always salute lone magpies "good morning mr magpie how's your wife and family?"

Bluebluemoon39 · 20/01/2022 12:34

Sorry but I just have to as now I have it going round in my head:

Oh, if I could talk to the animals, just imagine it
Chatting with a chimp in chimpanzee
Imagine talking to a tiger, chatting with a cheetah
What a neat achievement it would be

If we could talk to the animals and learn their languages
Maybe take an animal degree
I'd study elephant and eagle, buffalo and beagle
Alligator, guinea pig and flea

I would converse in polar bear and python
I would curse in fluent kangaroo
If people asked me, "Can you speak rhinoceros?"
I'd say, "Of courserous, can't you?"

If I conferred with our furry friends, man to animal
Think of the amazing repartee
If I could walk with the animals and talk with the animals
Grunt, squeak and squawk with the animals
And lord, they could talk to me

If I could talk to the animals
Think what fun we'd have asking over crocodiles for tea
Or maybe lunch with two or three lions, walruses and sea lions
What a lovely place the world would be

If I spoke slang to orangutan, oh
The advantages, any fool on earth can plainly see
Discussing Eastern art and dramas with intellectual llamas
That's a big step forward you'll agree

I'd learn to speak in antelope and turtle
My Pekingese would be extremely good
If I were asked to sing in hippopotamus
I'd say, "Whynotamous and I would"
If you stop and think of it, there's no doubt of it
I could win a place in history
If I could walk with the animals and talk with the animals
Grunt, squeak, squawk with the animals
And they could squeak and squawk and speak and talk to me
They would talk to me, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
The animals and me, can't you see me with them?
We're walking like friends
Talking like [Incomprehensible]

DepthOfTheAbyss · 20/01/2022 12:36

All the time. I apologise to our local tame squirrels as they expect everyone to offer them nuts and go up to everyone with their little expectant faces Smile

Eloisedublin123 · 20/01/2022 12:42

Of course! They are the best things in the whole world 😚 I get caught chatting to the robins in my garden by my neighbour fairly regularly- I’m talking proper chats 😂

BriansTail · 20/01/2022 12:45

Excellent. Glad I seem completely normal!

By best bird friend is a tame-ish bluetit that comes into our garden. If there's no feed outside he comes and sits on the kitchen windowsill and taps the window. He's a great little chap.

That’s lovely! My robin comes into the kitchen some days for a chat. Or looking for some bread!

ApolloandDaphne · 20/01/2022 13:07

I talk to the animals I meet on my dog walks. They are very nice to chat to. They never disagree with me which I enjoy.

BriansTail · 20/01/2022 13:22

Aw this is nice. I'm glad I posted!

Wisemensay · 20/01/2022 13:31

Just had a lovely chat with a flock of long tailed tits in the park. Lots of busy birds today!

BrickingIt44 · 20/01/2022 13:34

I'll often congratulate a robin on a particulalry excellent bit of singing. Or swear at a pheasant when they fly up at me

PinkBuffalo · 20/01/2022 13:36

I talk to all the animals and birds i come across 🙂
