We are going to Scarborough for a weekend soon & will have a 14 yr old with us. Any suggestions of things to do there or along that coast/surrounding area please? Any nice coffee shops or places to eat? Thanks.

At Scarborough there is a castle and a sealife centre. There are lots of great coastal walks around there; Ravenscar to Robin Hood's bay is lovely and there are lots of fossils to be found at Robin Hood's Bay. Whitby is a bit further up but that is a lovely place to wander around, and has the ruined abbey. We really like Filey for the beach, and Flamborough Head has lots of interesting bird life. Also lots of fabulous walks on the moors, like Roseberry Topping, Hole of Horcum, Goathland etc. York is about an hour away.

How soon are you going? There is also a surf school at Scarborough which operates all year round but you may not fancy that in the winter! There is also the North York Moors Railway but I don't think it's open at this time of year.

There's Eden Camp near Malton, which is a museum about world war 2. About 40 mins from Scarborough. Just down the road from there is Flamingo Land, amusement park and zoo.

Espresso Yourself is a nice cafe.

Agree about Flamborough Head, about 30 mins from Scarborough, lots of sea birds to see, although it's better in the summer when the puffins are there. There's also a lighthouse.

Sewerby Hall has nice gardens and a tea room, also a zoo, but might be closed in winter. There's Bridlington animal and bird park, again might be closed. Burton Agnes hall near Bridlington. Castle Howard on the A64 on the way to Scarborough.

Lots of amusement arcades on the sea front in Scarborough. A small funfair but again probably closed in winter.

Go to the Harbour Bar on the seafront for lovely ice cream and hot drinks, they do amazing knickerbocker glories.

There's also a cat cafe called Steampuss if you like cats Smile

My kids love Alpamare. It's a big swimming pool with slides and outdoor pools overlooking the bay. There's a bar and restaurant inside. Its reasonably pricy for swimming bit it's always gone down well with my 10yo and 13yo

Pomodoro in Scarborough is nice if you like Italian food.

I like the Lookout on the Pier cafe. Peasholm Park is nice to walk around. The seafront is good old-fashioned fun with plenty of arcades and tat shops - fun for a morning.

I will second Alpamare - forgot about that one when I posted! It's quite expensive but the outdoor pools are lovely and the cafe is good
