How long should I wait for my uni referee to send the reference before contacting them again?

I’m applying for uni in September as a mature student, the UCAS deadline is the 26th so a week tomorrow. I first contacted my former college last week Monday and requested a reference from my former tutor. Nobody responded until I pushed again on Thursday, by Friday morning my (very lovely) former tutor had emailed me to say he’d be more than glad to provide a great reference. Fab. So I inputted his details into the UCAS application and they emailed me immediately to say they’d emailed him to ask for his reference. He still hasn’t sent or even approved the reference yet.

When should I contact him again to ask him to approve it? I can’t send my application off at all until he approves and possibly sends it. I appreciate he’s a busy guy and I’m not his student anymore so not a priority but he did quite happily agree to do it and I’m panicking a bit because the deadline is approaching quickly.

It’s fine to send him a polite nudge 48 hours or so before the deadline. I’m always grateful to students for doing this!
