We need a name for our new pet! (Arachnophobes look away now!)

I warned you!

This is our new Caribena Versicolor Tarantula, a juvenile at only 6-8cm. And as it's still only small, we don't know the sex yet. None of us can think up a name! Apart from 3yr old DS, he wants to name it Cute Smile

The C.Versi is one of the most colourful types of Tarantula. As spiderlings (or slings, for short) they are Smurf blue (as seen in the attached screenshot), then at some point during their juvenile stage they moult into their adult colours of red, blue, purple and green, which, for a spider, is really pretty!

Bit of an arachnophobe here, fortunately not triggered by photos, but I have to say, that is one pretty spider. I’d almost, almost, be tempted to pet that.

I think Iris if it's a girl - it means rainbow.

I am sacred of normal house spiders but I like tarantulas - they seem more like animals than insects!

lemons44 · 18/01/2022 08:47

Ribena Caribena (especially if he/she is purple)

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 18/01/2022 09:23

@longcoffeebreak I'm not too sure, they are an arboreal type though so they live up high in the trees. I guess their colouring helps them to blend in with the leaves and flowers of the trees they live in.

Gladys. Male or female.

I can't help feeling that old man names would be best (if s/he turns out to be male)
Sid, Colin, Keith, Bert etc.

I would have no idea what to call a tarantula, I just clicked on to look at the picture 😁 Very pretty though!

@mistermagpie funnily enough a lot of tarantula owners are also scared of ordinary house spiders Grin (myself included, )

Our tarantula (a rather standard b.hamorii compared to your beauty) is called Webster. But in the hope yours is female I’d go with smurfette

Woofwoofbarkbark · 18/01/2022 10:27

@longcoffeebreak

What evolutionary advantage would being multicoloured give?
Constantly ready to paaaarrrtyyyyy!
Bluebluemoon39 · 18/01/2022 10:32

Tarantula sounds like Tarantino so how about Quentin? Or django?

Jackie brown if she's a girl?

Can you tell I'm a fan? 😂

I held a tarantula once at an exotic pet show and my dc's thought I was mega brave (none of the dads would hold it!)
