Why has all the press coverage of our corrupt government suddenly ceased?

Folange · 17/01/2022 15:54

I don't mean petered out, the way it usually does, it feels as though it has just suddenly stopped, from one day to the next.

Why isn't he resigning? What will it take for us to demand better from the people who are put in office for us and subsidised by us to do a job? We just don't seem to care anymore and every day they push the boundaries of acceptable behaviour further and further.

I know the running joke within the civil service is how short the public's memory is but surely we don't just move on from one day to the next?

I feel like starting a petition - is there a petition anywhere? I don't even know what I'd be asking for. Alexander de Pfefferwhatever out? And all his cronies? More transparency? Basic common decency? The introduction of proportional representation? I mean how broken does our system have to get before we stop looking at utterly corrupt dictatorships elsewhere and thinking "at least we're not...." ?

They've been told to shut up, that's why.

scaredsadandstuck · 17/01/2022 15:59

I had the same thought when I glanced at the news just now. The only mention is 4th or 5th story down on my BBC new app, which is Nadhim Zahawi backing Johnson! I feel like he could literally behead a kitten on national TV and he'd get away with it.

Sheabutterisdelish · 17/01/2022 16:01

There's not a lot more to say now, Sue Gray is where it's at 🤦‍♀️

well what more is there left to say about it?

sunshinesupermum · 17/01/2022 16:06

I noticed the same OP. Weird. It's as if the media has been silenced, but by whom?

sunshinesupermum · 17/01/2022 16:07

Whatever Sue Gray comes up with this Government is completely tarnished .

Notonthestairs · 17/01/2022 16:07

I'm guessing it's in part because Murdoch wants us to focus some hate on the BBC. Suits the Government and the media owners.

HeatonGrove · 17/01/2022 16:09

I think even the most ardent critics of the government are bored by this broken record. “He should go” v “lets wait and see what happens after the official Grey report”. That said, this story was still covered extensively on Today and World at One today.

There are other big new stories - Terrorist attack by Brit in US, Tonga tsunami, Fuel Poverty etc which should also be covered. News outlets have to choose what they cover if they want to retain viewers/listeners.

What astonishes me is the almost zero coverage of what is happening on the Ukraine/Russia border.

IsolaPribby · 17/01/2022 16:09

They're too busy reporting on Novak Djokovic, and whether Sue Grey will let him play at Downing Street, or something like that.....

ilovesooty · 17/01/2022 16:09

He isn't going to resign. He knows he doesn't have to.

And of course he'll be taking the view that Operation Red Meat will placate the people who voted for this government. It's quite openly contemptuous of the electorate.

noblegiraffe · 17/01/2022 16:10

Because they’ve stopped being corrupt. Boris said sorry about the corruption and we should accept that he was sincere and move on.

Theunamedcat · 17/01/2022 16:12

Liberal Democrats are calling for a vote of no confidence apparently

sashagabadon · 17/01/2022 16:14

I think it’s dawning on people that they may not like the alternative to Boris. I guess it could be Luz Truss ( she’ll be quite right wing I think) or Rishi ( bit of an unknown).
I read Matthew Parish at weekend and he hates Boris but it was quite a favourable Boris column imo and had a “be careful what you wish for “ type vibe to it and he was talking to centrists of both political hues.

Openly contemptuous - that's exactly how it feels. Like The Riot Club playing out in front of our eyes.

The BBC are cowed by Nadine Dorries. Dacre and Murdoch are steering their papers away from the issues. Only the Mirror and Guardian will really call the government out at the moment

And say what? As for a petition, that would be pointless. If you have an issue with it write to your MP (particularly if he or she is a Tory) and get others to do the same. As for PR with both Tories and Labour publicly in support of retaining "first past the post" there's fat chance of that happening without a hung Parliament (with the Lib-Dems holding the balance) or an outright Lib-Dem win.
thereisonlyoneofme · 17/01/2022 16:17

Because the news always moves on ! Everything has been said and we will have to wait for Sue Grays report.

noblegiraffe · 17/01/2022 16:18

Rishi ( bit of an unknown).

Rishi has just written off £4.5 billion of fraudulent covid claims and business loans. Fraudulent ones.

£20 uplift on Universal Credit was too expensive though.

Rishi is not that unknown.

AlexaShutUp · 17/01/2022 16:19

Probably something to do with Operation Save Big Dog. God knows how he has silenced the media, but his usual strategy of riding out the scandal and waiting for it to go away appears to be working as well as ever.

Folange · 17/01/2022 16:20

So that's it? We're happy with this awful man because the alternatives are potentially worse? Which means he can do whatever he likes?

Horological · 17/01/2022 16:29

Every time it looks like he is on the point of having to resign because of yet another lie something big happens to knock it off the main headline. Every. Single. Time.

So many people witnessed these parties. Not only those who were at them but umpteen cleaners, police, drivers etc. I am fairly certain there is more to come out, more photos even. And when it does come out watch the new headlines. Something big will happen to knock it off the front page after a day or two. Every. Single. Time.

girlmom21 · 17/01/2022 16:29

They're all talking about Operation Big Dog.
Victoria Derbyshire was doing a lot of reporting today on people opposed to Boris and interviewing Tories who won't back him.

sadpapercourtesan · 17/01/2022 16:31

@Folange

But, but, Keir Starmer is so stodgy. And Labour will sell the country to Hezbollah. Or something.
MrsTrumpton · 17/01/2022 16:31

I'm hoping it's the calm before the storm. The Mirror is reporting about possible Chequers parties being exposed – where Johnson can't claim it was civil servants misbehaving because none are based there – and then with a bit of luck Sue Grey's report damns him enough to trigger more letters going in. I read only 24 more are needed to trigger a vote of no confidence.

AlexaShutUp · 17/01/2022 16:31

@Folange

So that's it? We're happy with this awful man because the alternatives are potentially worse? Which means he can do whatever he likes?
To be fair, he has always done whatever he likes.

And I have never been happy with him, but clearly most of the electorate don't place much value on honesty and integrity, otherwise he'd have never been PM in the first place.

He has never made a secret of what he is like.
