Hi can anyone recommend a decent hamster cage as there seem to be so many on the market! I want to get a syrian hamster for each of my DS so need to accommodate 2 cages. Thanks.

None, it's cruel.

A large tank is best, also it needs to accommodate a wheel that's large enough for the hamster. Most that are sold are really only for dwarf hammies.

I think the minimum width is 80cm most on the market are cruel. They need much more space then you think I think hamster heaven is ok

I was just reading about the IKEA defolt hamster cage. Apparently it's the biggest cage available so I would try and get that. I have to say whenever I've seen hamsters in cages they spend much time desperately trying to get out. For this reason I couldn't get one myself. They seem miserable...

Hamster heaven is sort of the minimum size and a decent size wheel, I used a wodent wheel if they still exist

IKEA deltof. All cages sold in pet shops are far too small and a cruel life to subject a hamster to. They run for miles every night in the wild.

Fullofpudding · 16/01/2022 21:28

Thanks everyone. I asked because they all look so small so wanted something larger. I can't accommodate the ikea one so I might have to think of an alternative pet.

This is probably better over in the Pets - Small Pets section.

However I foster and rehome small rodents for an animal charity. We won't rehome a Hamster in anything smaller than 80cm long (RSPCA recommended minimum). Try the Alaska, or Savic Hamster Heaven www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/hutches_cages/hamster_cages/hamster_cages/197362?mkt_source=59309

Pet shops rarely sell anything suitable whatsoever.

As suggested above my Gerbils are in the Ikea Detolf, which is an Ikea display cabinet (£65), glass shelves removed, on its side with lids made for the top. It's a popular rodent hack. Pic attached for anyone else needing ideas.

They need daily free roam too (never plastic balls).

And a 28cm solid wheel. Anything smaller and it damages their back as its forced to arch. The wooden Trixie 28cm wheel is very good. Smile

@Annabelle69 I don't have hamsters now but regularly glare at the pets at home cages
I found a hamster heaven mega cheap on eBay and actually joined two together using the tubes over the top for mine! He loved it

Op - you can also toilet train them too which makes life easier

I had the Zoozone 2, picked it up on Facebook for a good price but it does take up a lot of room cause hamsters need a lot of room, also made sure to exercise her in her ball daily. Don't look to get a cage from pets at home most are not fit for purpose.

Forgot to mention, you will need to add mesh to the top of the cage too to prevent escape and accidents!! Important tip!

Pets at Home keep rescues very busy. I wish there was stricter laws around the welfare of pets and minimum housing requirements.

Nice idea joining two Hamster Heavens. Sand baths make a good litter tray and sieving the crud out with a sieve means not having to completely change it everyday.

Savic Plaza from pets at home is the minimum size you should be looking for.
