Pronunciation of Mariam - perplexed by The Bay

I always thought Mariam/Maryam was pronounced like Marian with just the last letter different. It's a really pretty name.

On "The Bay" it's being pronounced "Murry-um" - is that the correct pronunciation? Anyone know?

Might be Meryem, common in Turkey and I guess other Muslim countries

DH watched all of it on iplayer.

I thought it would be pronounced "Marry-am" IYSWIM.

Have a friend who pronounced it 'marry-um' as well. I believe it's an Arabic/Asian pronunciation so depends where you're from/culture etc.

I know a Mariam, she pronounces it more like Merryum.
