17 month old not saying any words

Hi everyone,

my 17 month old can't say any words at the moment.

He said about 4 words 8 weeks ago and used them for a while and now he has just stopped and just babbles in baby language all the time.

He grows up trilingual, I wonder if this has anything to do with it? Could he be confused? I speak German to him, my husband speaks Farsi with him and at the childminder it's English.

My understanding is that growing up in a bilingual household does mean that speech can be delayed a little. I grew up in a bilingual household and apparently I didn’t speak until I was nearly 2 but I’m pretty sure I’m fine! So there shouldn’t be any need to worry. But I’m by no means an expert on these things - if you are in the uk speak to your health visitor about whether a referral to a speech and language therapist would be appropriate.

DS didn't speak till after second birthday, by the time he was at school his speech was on the advanced side for his age. I think it's too early to be concerned, especially with the trilingual issue and if everything else seems fine.

Not a bilingual household sadly but my second daughter was slow to speak. I had one appointment with a speech therapist and then she cancelled the second appointment and speech was picking up by then anyway so I never went back.
It varies from child to child.
I remember being out on a walk with my mother and an elderly gentleman who lived nearby stopped to chat and admire the pretty toddler. Mum said "yes she's so sweet but doesn't say a word, not a word" and he lowered his voice and said "is she quite alright?"
Fortunately I saw the funny side, and knew my daughter was quite "alright".
She started talking soon after that, about two years old.
