If you are a dog person and your OH is a cat person (or vice versa) do you have a dog or a cat?

I don't live with DP at the moment but it is on the cards. DP had a cat when we met and I have a dog. He doesn't have a cat anymore and my DDog is very old. I think if and when we move in together we will probably get a cat. I love animals, and although I would prefer to get a dog I can see us having a cat although I can't explain why. I'm wondering what others have done when you both have a preference, and how you came to that decision.

I'm a dog person with a slight fear of cats, my husband has a general dislike for all animals.... we have a child who asked for a cat since she could talk! We now have a cat. Husband currently cuddled up with his fur baby 🙄 I would love a dog but it isn't practical and I have to admit the cat isn't any work like a dog would be.

We have 2 dogs and a cat

Mumdiva99 · 16/01/2022 00:21

Same as Thehillsarebright. Except we have 2 cats. The fear of cats is valid....
Cats are far better pets than I thought they would be. Even when one treats me with disdain except at 10;22 on a Wednesday when I need to leave for an appointment. Then she sits on my lap for a cuddle and purrs.

I'm a cat person, dh is a dog person. We have 2 cats. Also had 2 cats before these 2. It has never been practical for us to have dogs, due to renting and working. We will always have cats but know we will also get a dog once we buy a house. Dh has gone from hating cats to secretly loving them - have caught him many a time snuggled up to them!

When I met dh I had 1 ddog and 2 dcats.
We now have 2 dcats and 4 ddogs... He came with none. We have acquired 2 more jointly.. Dcats gets a free wash. And ddogs get to steal Dreamies..

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 16/01/2022 01:24

DH was a dog person when we met, I was a cat person. We have been together 20 years, 3 dogs, 7 cats and two kids. Currently a cat only household, but we have both been converted.

Dp was a dog person, I am a cat person. We have a cat who has turned dp into her loyal slave. Cats are mostly easier, cheaper and lower maintenance pets to start with than dogs. We would like to have both in the future but need to be in the right place in our lives.

I started off reading that thinking 'Oh, the husband is a miserable...' whatever but that last line has me giggling so much, what a twist!

thaegumathteth · 16/01/2022 01:52

I was both and dh was a cat only person. We have a dog and 2 cats. Only had a cat for years but that was more due to lifestyle etc.

thaegumathteth · 16/01/2022 01:54

I will say though that our dog has absolutely no respect for non dog loving dh . He can obviously sense his bad judge of pets and judges him for it.

DH was a dog person, I brought 3 cats to the relationship and he now loves them!! He says he didn't realise how much easier cats are then dogs!

Booklover3 · 16/01/2022 03:18

We have both

Haus1234 · 16/01/2022 03:28

I’m a cat person, DH is a dog person. We currently have 2 cats as a dog wouldn’t be practical (we live in a flat) but we will definitely have both in future.

LoveFall · 16/01/2022 03:32

We have a dog. We would have a cat as DH grew up with and loves cats, but I am very allergic to cats as is one DS.

It's a drag really, I would love to have a cat.

MotherWol · 16/01/2022 07:42

I’m a dog person, DH prefers cats. We had a cat in the past, who sadly died just before lockdown. We’ve talked about getting another cat, and I’m inclined to agree, because although I prefer dogs I understand how much work is involved in looking after one, and what the reality of ownership would be. As that work would likely fall to me, I don’t want one at this moment in time!
