Football kit advice for son

mb1980 · 15/01/2022 23:02

Our son in year 3 has just started football at school. I know nothing about football and want to buy him some football boots for playing on the field but have looked online and have found soft ground, hard ground, turf, etc. Can anyone advise what he needs please? He wore trainers last week and kept slipping over.

My DC had to have separate boots for the field and for astro turf.

The field studs were round (school wouldn't allow metal - only plastic) and the astro turf studs were sort of 'line' shaped.

I'd probably have a word with the school if I were you.

If he is playing on grass he will need football boots with studs (plastic studs not metal - most schools don’t allow metal studs as they are too dangerous).
If he is playing on Astro turf then he’ll need Astro boots - they have softer plastic moulded studs.

Go into Sports Direct and ask a member of staff.

Metal studs for this weather. If the school allows. Plastic studs are for when the ground is firmer.

Generally assume soft ground. If he is playing after a few weeks of no rain, then the trainers would do the job anyway. He needs the studs to get a grip in the mud.

If he is playing on grass, then he doesn't need astro boots - they are specifically for playing on artificial surfaces.

Ds1 usually has firm ground boots by choice hes recommended Nike tiempos to his younger brother who is just starting. Soft ground and hard ground are both generally plastic moulded studs. As I found out after yet another boot shopping trip yesterday

My DS has played for years. Metal studs are more for rugby and can cause nasty injuries in a tackle. I would get 1 x Astro and 1 x pair moulded studs, not blades, as he can wear these on grass and on 4G. Tbh, at his age, go to Decathlon. Their boots are absolutely fine. Get skins whilst you're there...

Thanks everyone for your help. It's been most helpful. We went to Sports Direct but only one pair in his size so will start to look online as we don't have a decathlon nearby.

He has really big feet - size 6 - so we have to pay adult prices. Can't believe the price difference!
