The surgical steel studs you get when you get ears pierced which have slightly different backs and the back snaps into a little groove on the shaft of the earring so they don't move about or come out easily.

Help me understand what these earrings are called - I need to order some for dd2 from Amazon ideally. Shes lost one of the studs and she's allergic to flipping everything else and swimming lessons have made her ear lobe quite sore. I need some more studs asap.

Thank you xxx

The remaining earring she hasn't lost is at her dads house.....I think they might be called 'locking back'? I don't want to order and just get standard studs they have to be the piercing type. They sell them in Claire's but they are £10+ and we need a few back ups!

Why do they have to be the piercing type? If she has metal allergies then titanium are your best bet. Get the screw-in flat back labret type.

Amazon or ebay are good sources

TeaStory · 15/01/2022 19:35

Try a professional piercer who will be able to advise you on gauge (the thickness of the bit that goes through the ear) and length. I also recommend Embamods, Isha Body Jewellery and Serenity Jewellery. I have metal sensitivities too, and titanium is perfect (it’s what they make medical implants from). Screw-in flat-back labrets are easily found and not too expensive, and can be anodised (put through a chemical and electric process) to make a range of colours. Plus they are really secure and can be slept in comfortably.

TeaStory · 15/01/2022 19:38

I would only recommend professional piercing outlets because places like Amazon and Etsy often have “mystery metal” that contains a lot of nickel and other things that set off sensitivities, plus aren’t polished to a high quality (so will have irritating micro grooves and scratches that can irritate and harbour bacteria).

In case you can’t tell, I’m passionate about good piercings!

Yes Caflon studs . I bought mine from eBay

GTAlogic · 15/01/2022 19:46

Please don't buy earrings for newly pierced ears from Amazon because they're often made cheaply in China and some metals used could potentially cause problems.

We had our dc's ear piercing done at a local piercing studio and they used titanium labret studs. The backs are flat and the fronts screw on. If you're unable to get to a local piercer then you could try a UK based store for example shop.bodyjewellery.co.uk/collections/labrets

Thanks all - it's not a new piercing she's had them done for years. I certainly wouldn't have got her ears done recently we have known they have 3 weeks of swimming lessons in jan since I think November.

She has to take earrings out for lessons and the usual tiny gold hoops she wears she can't get them back in on her own. Hence needing studs or they are out rest of the day and that paired with a piercing that's flaring up is rubbish.

I've ordered Caflon studs they were on prime so coming tomorrow - ideal

We use this spray www.wildcat.co.uk/product/careline/piercing-aftercare/piercing-care/ twice a day when my dc's ear plays up and it seems to clear it in no time.
