UTI. Very worried

Hi. Only a few days ago I finished ovulating, so if I am pregnant it would be too early to know but I have a urine infection and my Dr advised I need to take 6 x Nitrofurantion tablets over 3 days, 2 per day. The Dr said this is OK to take if I was pregnant but I'm still worried. Has anyone else taken this in the very early days of conceiving and had no problems. Looking for reassurance. Please help. Very worried due to having previous miscarriages. Thanks xx

I have a problem with my kidneys which makes me prone to utis. I was on nitrofuranation prophylactic throughout my first pregnancy because of the risks of infection to baby. He is now a strapping 10 year old.

Nitrofurantoin is fine. An untreated UTI could cause fever and make you unwell which would be more of a concern. It won’t interact with supplements or probiotics etc.
Trimethoprim - another common antibiotic for UTI can affect folate metabolism so best to avoid in early pregnancy.

You need to calm down and trust your doctor. Nitro is fine during pregnancy and won't interact with vitamins because they are vitamins! It's going to be a very long pregnancy If you're this panicky about every little thing.

Apologies I don’t remember the specific drug but I had antibiotics for a UTI, taken when pregnant but before I knew I was (about 4 weeks). In fact the UTI was my only symptom/out of the ordinary event I had for weeks.

Currently 38 weeks and the pregnancy wasn’t affected.

annlee3817 · 16/01/2022 20:59

I finished a course of those last weekend at seven weeks pregnant, I had them in my last pregnancy with no issues several times as had recurring UTI's. The latest ones didn't clear it, so have just done five days of another type also ok for pregnancy, finally feeling better.

Why do you think vitamins would interact with an antibiotic?

feedthepeony · 16/01/2022 23:49

You're going to drive yourself bloody mad if you're this worried about interactions with vitamins and you don't even know you're pregnant yet.

Chill out and trust the doc. You'll go bonkers if you're this het up already.
