How big is your fridge if you’re family of four?

2 years ago our fridge freezer went to appliance heaven so we replaced it with (what I thought) very similar one.

I hate it.
Fridge has 167 litres capacity and freezer is about 100 litres.

It is exactly the same size but not sure if the capacity is the same that the last one. It’s always full to the brim and I struggle to fit stuff in so the veg drawer is permanently out to fit in the stuff that actually needs to be refrigerated.

It’s cold now so I have a pot of soup sitting outside and cut up watermelon beside it. I don’t have a space for it in the fridge.

I’m thinking about replacing it. The question is whether I go for another fridge freezer with bigger fridge capacity or just tall fridge. I have 2 chest freezers in the shed (they are also filled up with frozen fruit, veg, bread, cooked meals and whatnot). I’m playing with idea of just tall fridge as I have freezer capacity elsewhere but we always had the fridge freezer so feel a bit adamant about changing that.

Kitchen is small and in awkward shape so I only have space for 1 appliance.

What would you go for?

Obviously I’m thinking about summer where everything will need to be stored in the fridge.

Extra fruit, drink, whatever is cooked for the next day or even storage for meat to defrost.

We have an American style fridge and I’d struggle to cope with smaller. Our fridge is always rammed

We have a split fridge freezer but when it fails, I'm going to replace with a full size fridge and a freezer in the garage.

We managed with a little under-counter one for years and it was a pain in the arse. Finally got a big American-style silver one last year (thank you PPI!) and I LOVE it. So much roooooooom Grin

The under-counter one is a drinks fridge now.

Out of interest how many % bigger are American fridges? Do American fridges have a freezer bit too like standard UK fridge freezer or is the whole thing just a fridge?

Woofwoofbarkbark · 15/01/2022 16:42

There's 5 of us and we have a small fridge on top with a freezer underneath. It's fucking tiny! But nothing I can do about it so I put up with it!

Mine is 403l fridge and 107l freezer. It’s French door fridge on the top and a drawer for the freezer at the bottom.
We have a separate chest freezer in the pantry.

LittleBearPad · 15/01/2022 16:45

We have something similar to what you’re describing and it does the job. No space for an American one.

It is full today as supermarket delivery came but will be under control tomorrow once we’ve had dinner.

The only time everything doesn’t fit is Christmas and to be honest there’s loads of jars in it that really don’t need to be in a fridge - jam etc.

passionfruitpizza · 15/01/2022 16:45

Can't remember capacity but got a fridge only for kitchen, no freezer drawers and 3 veg drawers it's amazing. It's a bit of a pain that only freezer is outside in garage but honestly worth it.

SquigglePigs · 15/01/2022 16:46

There's only three us but we regularly have guests. We have a fridge freezer and a separate under counter fridge (and freezer!). A regular fridge freezer isn't big enough. My ideal would be one full size fridge and one full size freezer but the layout of our kitchen does work for that.

Thanks for all the comments.

I don’t have space for anything else that this one space for 1 appliance and it’s 600 mm wide.

I would need to get over losing freezer space inside the house.
I go to the freezer a couple of times a day (annex beside the house) but several times a day to the fridge.

There’s always a lot of fruit and veg in the house (currently outside in the box).

The kids will only get bigger so will eat more.

I’m eyeing up 2 fridges from Argos- both over 300l capacity.

I’m in the area considered overseas by some suppliers (no mainland UK) so have limited choice.

Curry’s have FA available in the price range I’m looking up (up to £400 max)
