I'm pretty sure I coined these phrases, although I probably didn't

I'm certain I invented the word 'hangxiety' - I remember the moment I thought of it (about 12/13/14 years ago I guess), and how impressed I was with myself, and how I hadn't heard it before etc.

Similarly, 'hangry'.

I mean, I doubt I actually did invent them, I'm sure there's some explanation (I'm also not usually the kind of person that thinks they're amazing and comes up with all the stuff) but, is it possible that I WAS the first person to say these words and they spread out from little old me into the world? If so, wouldn't that be marvellous?

Anyone else think they were first to use a new word?

I invented hanitiser, years ago before covid. I know I’m not the only one, but I was the first person I heard say it. Grin

YahBooFucks · 12/01/2022 17:28

Haven't heard that one before, @RandomDent so, as far as I'm concerned, you now have copyright

I also feel like I invented a new concept today...
I'm 'tidy-messy' - on the surface, my house looks pretty tidy but if you open drawers, cupboards, wardrobes etc you'll be faced with a shit tip of mess.
Along the lines of 'skinny-fat'.

I've invented pointful. It's the opposite of pointless.

MidCenturyClegs · 12/01/2022 17:34

I was sure I'd invented 'cockwomble' until I ventured on to the Relationships pages here... Grin

YahBooFucks · 12/01/2022 17:35

Like it, @DuckWithOneWing - is blue officially copyrighted as yours Smile

'Blue' = 'now' in my previous post 🤦‍♀️

Not sure it's a very good phrase, but I invented poorly nervous. It's a bit like poorly sick, but means you feel a bit nauseous or have other illness symptoms due to nerves (such as before an exam) rather than due to being ill.

Bamaluz · 12/01/2022 17:45

I always use 'fluppy' for a fluffy puppy, I haven't seen it used anywhere, unless anyone knows differently.

SisterAgatha · 12/01/2022 17:45

I’ve noticed I do use buzz words before anyone else and I always feel like people got them off me but they didn’t. It must that I am good at picking up words off other people too. It’s a zeitgeist thing.

gluenotsoup · 12/01/2022 17:45

I might win the thread.
Years ago when I first started on mn, having timed sex to conceive was known as bd, or baby dancing. I couldn’t stand it and started calling it doing the deed instead, aka dtd.
It cottoned on a bit, and is used here all the time instead of bd. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

My friend coined the phrase wine o'clock in 2002 when I drunkenly asked her what the time is.

I think this is one of those things where people are working independently the same thing at the same time, like the theory of evolution or discovering a planet.

CeleriacOfTheNight · 12/01/2022 17:48

My daughters friend thought she'd created the phrase...

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

I invented the term “care experienced” years before it became the term for social workers to use about any young people who had been in care, were in care, were care leavers, had been adopted or had another court order made from care… should've registered it, or something.

We just be friends as I used to say that in 1999 🤣

😆 aha!

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/01/2022 18:40

My 76 year old dad is convinced he invented “bingo wings”

JamesGetIn · 12/01/2022 18:41

I'm sure I invented the word temperaturemental. It's when you can't decide if you are too hot or too cold.

grooveonthemove · 12/01/2022 19:12

I invented 'hangrover' - when you're hungover and hangry and need a plateful of carbs Grin

RandomDent · 12/01/2022 19:17

I remember Alf Stewart saying “beer o’clock” on Home & Away. Must have been the 90s.

Oh, that's one of mine Grin
YahBooFucks · 12/01/2022 19:20

I love all these inventions!
So, is it one of those weird 'collective consciousness' type things, where things happen simultaneously but independently? As in lots of people started saying 'hangxiety' (and feeling smug about their cleverness) at the same time(ish)? Which is kind of bizarre and wonderful in it's own way.
Or is it more likely that the word just spread after it came out of my little mouth, slowly but surely? I really hope it's this one because I want to continue to feel clever and smug Grin.

Remember when Alexandra Burke thought she invented the phrase “elephant in the room” Grin
