What happened to REM?

They were so massive!

I think they just got fed up with the music world and just stopped recording - I saw an article recently though suggesting that Michael Stipe was back recording on his own ?

The Wikipedia entry gives a timeline. Basically, in the late 90's they wanted to reinvent themselves, the drummer quit, they went on as a three-piece but didn't do as well, and then they split up in 2011.

Just heard the beautiful ‘night swimming’ the other day and was thinking the same thing!

I saw them at Glastonbury in 2003
Seems a long time ago now but god it was an amazing song ( everybody hurts)
The silence as they started and then everyone singing along, one of my all time favourite memories
