Sorry I know there's lots of threads but I can't find the answers I need.

I want to buy an Apple Watch for DW. For the following:

-running
-steps
-reading texts

She takes her phone out when running anyway and wouldn't ever leave it at home... so does she need cellular or is just gps ok?

That's it really. Will an SE do all I need? is a 7 worth splashing out for?

Sorry for dumbness! First smart watch! Thank you

Thanks OP. I’m just about to buy my first one and would be interested in the answers. So fat I’ve decided gps, non cellular and thinking of splashing out on the 7 as I keep tech for as long as poss and reckon this will give me longest term value.

I've had an SE for a year, it's fine for all of that. The main difference with the next model (at that time) was the heart monitoring which I wasn't bothered about.

auldmaw · 11/01/2022 16:15

I have an Apple Watch and it's fine for all of the above. Can still use the running / exercise stuff without the phone nearby. Only need that to receive texts / calls via watch. I've no idea what edition mine is, had it for years, but it does all the stuff you want so any model will work for you.

Mine is cellular which is fab if I forget my phone but aside from that I only use it to take photos 😳

AlternativePerspective · 11/01/2022 16:26

The SE is fine for all those things. However I agree with PP that if you want the product to last the longest then I would buy a 7.

I have a 6 which DP bought me for Christmas in 2020, and I use it for all those things as well as Apple Pay which is brilliant IMO.

I have little interest in the heart function stuff. I have measured my heart rate on occasion when my heart was beating too fast, (I am in heart failure,) but I’ve never bothered with things like the ECG function.

Bearing in mind that cellular will cost you about another £10 a month on top of the price of the watch, so tbh you could just by the standard 7 and not have to spend much more than if you bought an SE with cellular.

If she takes her phone anyway, then the GPS model will be fine.

It acts as a remote for the camera on my phone. So I can put the phone at the end of a table and then use the watch to take a group photo.

ExtremelyDetermined · 11/01/2022 22:57

Yes, it's a bit easier than using the self timer on the phone itself

I got a 3 series a few years ago and I’m glad I got cellular. It’s £5 per month. But it’s great when I’ve forgotten my phone or out of battery unexpectedly. And means I don’t always have to take my phone out.

I didn’t think I’d need cellular but I had six months free and then realised it was useful for me. Still have the 3 series now haven’t needed to upgrade.

WOW Star it's worth it just for this! One of is always cut out of family pics, usually DW who takes the photos! Grin

The advantages of an Apple Watch! When I got mine I remember saying to someone how amazing it was to be able to find out the time without having to get my phone out!

I do love mine though, took a while to get into a charging routine

ENoeuf · 12/01/2022 11:26

😂 yes I love it. Put the camera on a bench or something and we all get in. Can do a 3 second count down as well so every photo isn’t you pressing your watch 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2022 13:11

I've got an SE. It's not worth paying the extra for a 7

bestbefore · 12/01/2022 13:25

I do find the battery doesn't last anywhere near as long as my old fitbit
