Missed miscarriage or wrong dates?

Hi, I've just joined but this site is the only place I've managed to find any useful information and wanted to ask my own question.
I went for an early scan last week when I shoukd have been 9+5 weeks due to some spotting. I'd gone prepared for the worst but expecting good news and I knew spotting was fairly common. However, at the scan I was asked if my dates could be wrong because it looked like a 5 week pregnancy. My dates were water tight, there's no chance I could only be 5 weeks (I'd had a positive test 7 weeks before!) I was told it was most likely a missed miscarriage and to go back in 7 days for a re scan. Since then the bleeding has got worse but nothing more than period bleeding. The heaviest bleeding has been going on for about 3 days now but it's not been more than period bleeding. Me and my partner know it's been a misses miscarriage and we've been grieving about it since, but I've since seen people write about having heavy bleeding through pregnancy and everything being fine? I know I'm holding onto the tiniest thread of hope, and the fact that the scan only showed a 5 week pregnancy seems conclusive to me. But has anyone been in a similar situation? Next scan is Thursday this week - I was going to cancel but I'm going to go just to make sure.

Hi @Annamils - I think the fact that the scan was dating at 5 weeks combined with the bleeding makes it very very unlikely to be anything other than a MMC, particularly as you're sure of your dates. I'm sorry.

I've been there, I'd never heard of a MMC so I found it quite hard to get my head around. I'd go back for the repeat scan as they'll need to make sure you've passed all the tissue.

I had a D&C with mine as my body was not going to miscarry on its own, the nurses told me I could try again as soon as I felt emotionally ready - they like you to wait for your next period but I think that's for dating reasons really.

Ah, honey. I've been there too.

I think it's probable that you are having a MMC. I know only too well that feeling of hanging on to all hope against the odds. Keep the appointment, because either way, it'll be good to know what is going on.

All you can do is wait, it's awful, but you'll know soon enough whether it's a viable pregnancy or not.

Take good care of yourself in the meantime. Fingers crossed for you.
