HELP anyone good with Microsoft word?

I've got these weird squares that keep popping up.
I can't delete them
I've tried cutting and pasting into a new document the text above and below but they reappear

Please help I have an assignment to submit

Is your document in typesetting mode? Look in the menus for a button that looks like a backwards capital P and click it.

Try copying the text into Notepad & reposting from there. That should clear all the formatting.

Otherwise you have hidden content. You could try and copy and paste into Notepad first (which doesn't support anything other than text) then copy and paste from there into a new doc. You will lose all formatting though.

Can you share a screenshot? Not of anything that might identify you obviously, but including the squares.

Are you pasting the text in from Notepad originally? I think they might be spaces or return spaces? Try turning the show/hide paragraph marks off (the symbol that looks like a Word Return space in the paragraph formatting tab).

They happened because you typed 3 asterisks in a row, which created a border.

Word has so many amazing capabilities that we don't scratch the surface of. Where do you learn it?

He's lying, you can't just highlight & delete because it won't let me highlight or delete

OP, you have to click in the border. Not on the squares themselves.

No margin at all, TomAllenWife? There must be a space before it starts. Surely?

There's space but you can't get the cursor into it

I managed to create the black squares and noticed that it is something to do with borders - so I went to the borders icon on home screen, selected "no borders" and black squares disappeared

Ok. I've done it to a document and managed to get rid of it.

Mine also doesn't grey out the area at the start of the line. Mine greys out a block in the centre when it's a centred paragraph, and the fast list button pops up too. It's a left hand grey square when it's left justified.

When that square is greyed, the delete button works.
