Other US cities 'better' than New York

Inspired by another thread. I've never really fancied New York, although I'd probably go one day just because of the hype. However, I'd love to do some other US cities first. Can anyone recommend where to go?

Loved Seattle and Honolulu.
Wasn't keen on San Francisco other than the Bay Area which is nice

Oh and haaaaaaated Vegas!

Loved the nature on the west coast, didn't like the cities (apart from Seattle)

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/01/2022 18:55

We really liked Philadelphia, San Francisco and Portland. Also enjoyed Boston, Seattle and Washington DC.

FanGirlX · 10/01/2022 19:07

smh at the suggestion in the other thread about going to San Francisco instead of New York to avoid screaming, drugged up people with mental health problems .. and that was based on staying in a swanky place in Fisherman's Wharf.

I thought the homeless problem was far worse in SF and Miami than in NYC but it's a good 5 years since I've been to the US.

Will book a trip when COVID is calmer, so reading with interest.

JorisBonson · 10/01/2022 19:10

Chicago is a very cool city. New Orleans is wonderfully batshit.

I loved SF, such a nice vibe.

Liverbird77 · 10/01/2022 19:14

@StoatMilk we visited Paisley Park and it was fascinating!
Didn't do the other things on your list though.
We visited the diner from Jingle all the Way, a flour musuem (!) and some Paul Bunyan stuff. It was a great laugh!

Here's a great Youtube channel. Advice on lots of cities from a guy who's enjoyable to listen to.

Philadelphia is great. I'd love to go to Boston. I enjoyed Seattle and San Fran.

And yes I know you didn't ask for Canadian recommendations but Vancouver is amazing.

Equimum · 10/01/2022 20:39

I'm another one who loves Washington DC. It has a more European type vibe.

Atla · 10/01/2022 20:57

I liked NY, Washington DC, Boston, Minneapolis st Paul would be nice for a weekend, and parts of Minnesota are really beautiful.

I lived in the mid-west for a little while, the Black Hills national forest, The Badlands and just seeing the Prairies in South Dakota was amazing, so much history - we did a road trip from Sioux Falls to Rapid City over a few days. It was like being in a movie. Not easy to get to from the UK though (was definitely no direct flight back then) I think you would have to fly to Minneapolis and get a connecting flight?

I'd love to visit California and the Pacific Northwest.... And New Orleans!

AllLopsided · 10/01/2022 20:58

I enjoyed Boston and San Francisco but it was nearly 30 years ago!

TheCanyon · 10/01/2022 21:08

I'm surprised so many have said Chicago. It may well have been a great city once but...

Savannah is a great wee city.

Salt lake city is awesome, actually the whole state is awesome.

San diego much better than up North

Got a soft spot for pittsburg.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 10/01/2022 21:08

@BiscuitLover3678

Not San Francisco, the homeless problem is appalling and downright scary (don’t think you can walk through the centre during the day!)

Agree Chicago is good.

Glad l went there before it got so bad....l know of a couple that were afraid to leave their hotel because of this. Such a shame.
JesusWeptLady · 10/01/2022 21:11

I would say genuinely, hand on heart - if you don't fancy NY don't bother with the rest of the US. And I live in the US (former Brit).

Aquafizzle · 10/01/2022 21:12

Another vote for Washington DC. It's a beautiful city with amazing museums and memorials.

New Orleans is so unique and fun... a really special place.

LaLaFlottes · 10/01/2022 21:14

Washington and Boston are both fab - but if you’re going to both of those you may as well also go to NYC on the same trip Wink

oncemoreunto · 10/01/2022 21:16

I live in Chicago and think it is good modern city to visit.

I really enjoyed New Orleans without dc, older and smaller. A real party town.

We all loved Charleston, it is old and small.

Didn't particularly enjoy Nashville, too many drunken teens.

DC has great museums and outdoor monuments if that is your thing.

I thought Detroit was unexpectedly enjoyable with lots of museums and places to eat.

Miami is where I would live if I could choose, I love the Latin vibe and the coast.

ashorterday · 10/01/2022 21:28

New Orleans

allfurcoatnoknickers · 10/01/2022 21:30

I live in NYC, but really rate Boston, D.C., Vegas and Seattle.

I also had a lot of fun in Charlotte N.C. - young city with a great cultrual and food scene.

Ohmycron · 10/01/2022 21:32

Toronto

Ohmycron · 10/01/2022 21:33

I preferred Toronto to Boston.
